Filament sensor on or off

so i just upgraded my MK3S+ to the MMU2S and have been printing for a bit and today I had a piece of filament break in the MMU the printer continued printing because the filament sensor in the mmu still had a piece in there but the hotend had nothing in it and was printing nothing so i looked in the menus and noticed the filament sensor was turned off on the printer should I turn it on or leave it off

RE: Filament sensor on or off

I've been printing with my MMU more than a month now.  I'm sure why you'd want it off.

It was defaulted to off

@usmcsni

Strange.   The MMU and the printer are two separate boards.  There are definitely cases where the two can get out of sync.   I'd be interested to see if anyone else chimes in.  The fact that the whole contraption works at all is quite a miracle in itself lol

After some mods it does mostly work though.  I've got a print job going or else I'd go in and check the setting for mine.  I don't recall specifically turning it off/on so I'm curious if my default is the same.

I turned it on several times and it turned itself off again somehow. I assumed it's supposed to be turned off by the MMU2S and only used for loading.

Mine is printing now, but when going in to the tune menu it shows the filament sensor as ON.

I don't remember changing that after installing the mmu.

RE: Filament sensor on or off

I just added an LED indicator to the IR filament sensor.  Later, I did a print where the filament ran out, but it was not detected.  I discovered that the filament sensor was set to [off] in the setup menu.  This let the filament run out undetected.  I was confused because I had run out of filament previously and it was detected.  I never turned the filament sensor from [on] to [off].  But, in the process of installing the LED indicator, I switched the machine on and off several times.  I figured out that if you disconnect the filament sensor and boot the printer, the bootup sequence detects that the filament sensor is missing and flips the filament sensor from [on] to [off] in the settings menu.  But, it never tells you this has happened.  Once the sensor is reconnected properly, the setting is never switched back unless you do it manually.  And the MMU2 will use the filament sensor for loading even if the settings menu says [off].  So everything looks correct until you run out of filament and it's not detected.

That is something I had to test for my self.

After disconnecting and power on the printer it shows as N/A. After turning off, reconnecting the sensor and turning on it shows the filament sensor as OFF.

That is something to remember when working on the printer.

And when using the MMU the FINDA is the sensor that detects the filament run out. That way the extruder can push the piece in the PTFE tube back to the MMU to unload. But that doesn't make a difference when the filament sensor is turned off. Than the printer will continue like it still has filament.
