exploit MMU 1 after upgrade to MMU 2

First of all, hello everybody!
I'm Giovanni from Italy.
I have a question, I didn't find any answer about it, but maybe some of you already had/made the same question and I've searched it on forum with wrong words..
I have an i3 MK2 with MMU (first version). Now I've pre-ordered two upgrades: MK2.5 and MMU 2.
My simple question: is the old version of PEI sheet and the old version of MMU, not broken and still working, bound to retire so soon?? I'm very glad for the Prusa work always evolving, but at the same time I'm sorry if I have a good and "new" thing bound to be useless.. Have you any ideas about how to use it in a different way?
Thank you guys!

Hi Giovanni,
I have an old Chinese printer, that is going to get updated with Prusa spares!

or mabye you have a friend who can use them,

or maybe a local hack space or makerspace could use them!

regards Joan

Well, you have three quality motors, an original E3D hotend and a very good heated bed. So you're only missing a PSU, control board (better to invest in a decent one) and the mechanical parts to build an extra printer.

These are both very easy to build, expandable and very well documented:

The other way around is to keep your MMU 1.0 on MK2 and use both upgrades to MK2.5 and MMU2 to build a complete printer.

I am actually doing this as my MMU 1.0 is okay. Sourcing the missing parts for a MK2.5 is easy and since there will be wait for the MMU delivery, at least you have an additional working printer until then. I might then consider upgrading my MMU and buying the missing parts.

Sourcing missing parts to have a full MMU2 kit from the MMU upgrade should be also easy since most of the MMU 1.0 parts are easy to find. The most difficult ones (multiplexer part, switch board) are probably not included into MMU2.0 as the principle of the 2 MMU units differs strongly.

I was thinking of the same and maybe I'll build a zaribo 330 (rather than 220) with
MMU2 and keep the MK2S+MMU1 as is.

It might be easier to build.
I still did not order MMU2, will wait because MMU1 works fine for me and the
MMU2 effectiveness is not yet verified by others.

Prusa has not yet put a parts list for the MMU-2 Upgrade on their order page. Other upgrades, like MK2.5 have such a list. The pictures and videos show that MMU-2 uses four motors, three plus the extruder. The MMU-1 also uses four motors, all extruders. If you order the Upgrade from MMU-1 to MMU-2 does it reuse those motors or will you actually have 'extra' motors?

Re: exploit MMU 1 after upgrade to MMU 2

I also don't know but it looks to me the new MMU2 motors have inbuilt spindles. I think they won't redesign it to accomodate the old motors+couplers in favor of selling only one variant of the upgrade (i.e. old MMU users will probably just get the same stuff).

EDIT: I checked back in the webshop and it clearly states the upgrade is not the same as the full MMU kit. So I stand corrected, but still don't see how the motors would be reused. I guess the parts you'd carry over from the MMU1 are the hotend and bondtechs, probably also the multispool holder.

Re: exploit MMU 1 after upgrade to MMU 2

Sorry I guess I could have replied in this topic or somehow need to link them. I'm kind of doing the same thing where I have a quad MMU1.0 installed on a printer (derived from MK2 components using mini rambo and MK2 MMU genuine Prusa Firmware) so I would like to not completely tear that down and reuse the motors since MMU 2.0 is so radically different and required me to buy a whole MK3 printer anyway. https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/general-discussion-announcements-and-releases-f53/mmu-2-0-upgrade-kit-details-technical-differences-t23412.html

Don't take this as me complaining, a select few of us are getting the MMU 2.0 at a steep discount.
I just want to talk about and further define what is or is not in the MMU2.0 upgrade VS full kit.
