Discontinued MK2/S firmware updates?

MK2.5 and MK3 are under constant development and firmware updates (at time of this writing on version 3.3.1). On the other hand, MK2/S is firmly stuck on v3.1.0.
Does this mean that further firmware development is not going to happen and is therefore discontinued?

It would be nice to adopt power panic feature and some others also for the older printers. Or at least for MK2.5.

Hi Mitja,

Power Panic requires hardware that is not part of the mk2 or mk2.5

people seem happy with 3.1.0 for the Mk2

regards Joan

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

+1 for others are happy with 3.1 0. Sometimes good is good and 3.1 for the MK2 was fantastic. If it ain't broke... I hope this doesn't make you feel like they have abandoned you, but I don't believe there are many PUL requests for the MK2 in the queue and it really was a phenomenal firmware upgrade in my opinion. I would say that it most often prints faster than my MK3 for that matter. I have a couple of each. The MK2 is fantastic and with a little care will continue to produce great prints. As Joan indicated MK2.5 upgrade includes a filament sensor and build plate, but the hardware (PSU and module in this case) for the power panic is not present to keep costs down. A UPS would serve you well in this case, however, and not a bad idea for any of your important electronic devices.

Thank you both for replying.
But as i can tell, there is not much to the additional hardware than a simple optocoupler that triggers a signal when there's a mains power failure.
People with Marlin Kimbra successfully used a simple pcb ( https://m.ebay.com/itm/3-Channel-Optocoupler-Isolation-Module-AC-220V-Testing-Module-No-PCB-Holder-/311751269039?_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1 ) to trigger a signal on a servo pin on a Ramps board.
So, if that could be done on an arduino, i see no reason why it couldn't be done on a rambo board.
This board should be set up before the PSU and an output signal should be sensed on an empty pin on the rambo.
Or am i completely missing the point?

I think you are. The Mk2 is old and no longer being developed. It does what it was advertised to do. However, if any user wishes to modify their Mk2, they are free to do so. There is even a Mk2 sub-forum for user-mods, where this can be discussed.

There is no commercial reason why PR would want to put further development effort into an old printer model which has been superseded by a newer model with more features.

Though that said, I managed to run MK2.5 firmware on my MK2S. Not really sure why I bothered though.

EDIT: Oh wait, yes I do. I put in a PINDA2 and wanted the temperature compensation. In hindsight there really wasn't any performance benefit, so it wasn't worthwhile.

OK, I agree with you, but nonetheless, power panic for a MK2/S would still be a nice feature for those of us who have that printer and would not like to buy a new one. The print quality on MK2/S is superb, so upgrade it with a feature like this would make us even happier ☺️
Anyway, thanks for your replies.

power panic for a MK2/S would still be a nice feature

As has been mentioned already, a cheap ($50) UPS would be much better than a "power panic" feature. The first weekend after receiving my first 3D printer, I was 12 hours into a 15 hour print; power went off and ever since then my printers have shared my server's UPS!

The print quality on MK2/S is superb

And that is so true. Even with the MMU, the Mk2 is really an excellent printer.

I have to agree with the UPS suggestion. It works seamlessly.

Re: Discontinued MK2/S firmware updates?

In principle all is open source

The benefit of the newer firmware is that the pinda2 is usable
Power outage is no thing for me there were only 4 in the last 30 years i can remember

Because with the 2.5 update it gets no new board there is no limitation.
Only the mk42 has to ported to the newer firmware.
(the xyz calibration + mesh bed leveling)
I started porting the laser sensor and pinda2 stuff to 3.10 but the other direction i think is the better way.
Also because the MK52 24V boards are not free or good available (mostly only the 12V Version) and the MK42 is modable and runs great @24v
(tested with a orballoprinting one) the genuine MK42 will be updated soon 😀

Otherwise the mk2.5 upgrade pack has a good price compared what you get.
The only downside for me is the 12V version. But i haven't checked if the 12v version is modable in the same way the MK42 is ... 😉
