Compact dual material setup
Hi all,
I just received my MMU2S upgrade and am considering to revive the MMU2 (I put it back into its box after my first impressions).
I only want to use two filaments (not five) and need a more compact setup than the original (I just don't have the space). Any recommendations for a dual material setup? I recall someone mounting the two reels on the left and right side of the frame, but can't find this again. What about the buffer? Is it necessary for a two spool setup? Or should I try this autorewind thing?

There is no reason you can't just use 2 tools if that is all you need. Just don't select "Load All" in the Load Filament menu by mistake 😆
The buffer is not required, but you do need some way of dealing with the extra filament when it ejects. I don't have the space for the buffer so I use auto rewind spools and have been successful.
You probably can print yourself a spool holder that will let you mount a couple over top of the MMU if you don't have the "table" space. You'll probably have to model something up yourself though as I am not aware of a pre-existing spool rack like that. Keep in mind, however, that you will still need space as the filament will have to get from the spool to the MMU in as gentle of a curve as possible and I would recommend PTFE tube from MMU to holder to help guide where the "extra" filament ends up. Given that I would plan on it needing to go out about 10" from the spool to allow a gentle enough loop to come back to the MMU inputs.
You might also think about an arm to help control how the filament/PTFE droops to make sure it doesn't interfere with anything.
I think what you are after is totally doable, but it will take some work. I would suggest you get it working normally with the buffer or with auto rewind spools before attempting this project. That way you know where the problem lies if you start having issues.

Thanks! I'll look into that. I darkly remember having seen a setup as you describe, but that must have been in the beginning of the MMU2.
At the moment I don't really like the idea to rip apart the (perfectly working) MK3 extruder just to upgrade to the new filament sensor. But this is another story!

Actually it was Jonathan I think:
Two spools on the frame with two PTFE tubes on the left and right side.
