Slow blink that won't clear

Finally got the MMU added on last night (MK3S). Had some initial issues getting tool one loaded, but after playing with the T commands in the serial port I finally got things flowing.

I ran off a single color Benchy with no issues, so I stepped up to a two color Benchy. As of going to bed all was well and there was clear evidence of successful tool changes (in fact I got to see one happen).

This morning, however, I found that it appears to have gotten angsty that I didn't stay up all night with it. Tool 2 is giving me a slow red blink.

From what I gather this is a load issue. I did find that filament loose as if it ejected too far on the last change. It wouldn't go back in nicely, so I removed it and found the end rather stringy. I trimmed the end and was able to feed it back in, through the selector and into the outbound PTFE.

When I pressed the middle button, it unloaded the filament and went back to blinking. Now it has a good hold on the filament (I can't pull it out or push it in) and when I press the middle button again it advances the filament a bit (maybe just to the FINDA?) and then backs it back out and blinks at me.

Possibly worth noting is that I do not have the buffer installed due to lack of space. There are no tangles to other issues with either spool though.

Any idea what I need to do to get it printing again?

So I got a bit button happy...

The first button didn't do anything. The middle button continued to act as above. The third, however, turned the light green, and started things moving again.

It heated the extruder back up, moved it over the purge block, fed the filament all the way to the extruder, then ejected it and went back to the slow blink.

Middle button again just did it's little dance and the third button again started it's ballet, but this time it resumed printing.

So now it's printing again and I've watched it do two more tool changes. Hopefully the next 7 hours will go smoothly...

Not smoothly at all apparently...

So after about 20 minutes of printing just fine, now I'm getting a fast blink on 2 with the "MMU needs attention" message on the LCD, but the selector is on 1.

I can fully remove and reinsert both filaments (1 and 2) without issue. Everything appears to be clear.

For Tool 1 I can manually push the filament all the way down to the extruder, but when I tell it to get on with it's business (middle button) it only ejects the filament a little (maybe 10cm?) rather than all the way to the FINDA. Repeating the process continues to perform additional short reloads like that until it actually spits it out past the drive gear.

Any idea why Tool 2 would be giving me the fast blink with the selector at Tool 1? How do I fix it?

Partially pulled the selector motor (zip ties keep me from fully removing it) and didn't find anything stuck or show signs of binding. Still couldn't make it get on with it's business so I gave up and reset the printer.

After the reset I tried to load tool 1 (where the selector already was) and got the 5 red blinking lights. No sign of a blockage or string. I fed a piece of scrap filament backwards through the selector and all the way out the back. No hindrance and no sign of anything getting pushed out. After that, however, it went through the load process for both tools 1 and 2 with no objection and it's now restarted the print.

Any ideas on why these issues are happening and input on how to fix it without losing the print would be greatly appreciated.

Ok at this point I'm reasonably sure that my issue is that the filament is getting caught up with the cable for the extruder and that is causing issues during changes. If that is indeed the case I think a bit of patience will get me through until I find a solution to what to do about spooling/buffering in my limited space.

Soooo glad I didn't break down and build an enclosure yet 🤣

I'm less thinking that this is a lack of buffer issue. My second attempt ultimately fought tooth and nail on some filament changes and when I finally got the MMU playing nice, I found the nozzle is all clogged up.
