MMU Spool mounting

Can you mount spools above the frame, not attached.. Would it still be able to feed correctly ?

Re: MMU Spool mounting

I plan to use a shelf above and behind the printer with filament going down through short ptffe tubes then longer tubes to the extruders

Similar to my mmuV1

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

I have designed and printed wall mount brackets to hold up to five spools above and behind the printer.

Re: MMU Spool mounting

I've been using a Palette+ for the past several months. The solution I came up with was to make spool hangars that fit on a closet hangar rod. This lets me have about a dozen spools in use or ready to go, enough to keep both the Palette and MMU busy. I also have little tags that clip to each spool hangar to keep track of which material is loaded (I use PLA, ABS, PETG, TPU, and PVA).

@peter.l22: Bit of topic, but any reason you decided to stick the scroll wheel on the z-top instead of on the extuder? And are you happy with it? I've been considering buying one for quite a while...

The scroll wheel needs to be in a spot where it's not moving around and the tube can reach from the scroll wheel to the extruder.

I like the Palette for my use case, which is a fun toy I enjoy tinkering with and which sometimes works as expected. There's still gremlins, though, so I would recommend buying the MMU first unless you really need multi-material before you can get an MMU.

The biggest problem is that no matter how carefully I calibrate it, the Palette doesn't always stay in sync with the printer. I'm still experimenting with this, but I suspect there's bugs in the feedback loop they use to keep things lined up. The best I've been able to get is about one out-of-sync splice per hundred. This means that small flat things (keychains, etc.) are pretty reliable, but anything tall with hundreds of splices is almost guaranteed to have a layer of the wrong color.

That seems to have changed then? The Palette+ setup instruction show it mounted on the extruder.

That was pretty much my first idea when I saw it. So I guess I wasn't that wrong. Wonder if that is something that was also improved in the + version.
I have a well-running MMU (v1) (2nd one actually, the first upgrade I bought went in the bin after a couple days), but that doesn't stop me from looking around to what else is out there 🙂

As far as I know, it's always required the scroll wheel to be mounted to the printer frame and not the extruder. The online setup guide https://support.mosaicmanufacturing.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003044348-Palette-Palette-Setup-Guide has several images showing different direct-drive extruders and all of them have the scroll wheel attached to the frame.

You are absolutely right, I was mistaken with the bowden mounting plate. But I'll stop with the thread hijacking, sorry.

Re: MMU Spool mounting

If you check out the comments on the Official Prusa Blog ( https://www.prusaprinters.org/multi-material-upgrade-2-0-is-here/ ), Mikolas Zuza comments that:

We’re working on an updated enclosure design for the MMU, where the spools are mounted on top of the enclosure. So they can be mounted differently, but the vast majority of testing has been done with the spools behind the printer.

Once they have worked it out we'll have an "official" technique for it.

Spool mounting is critical for correct operation of the MMU 2:

That is based on one users testing so far, and if there's one thing I've learn't it's not to underestimate the ingenuity of the maker community... as I said before nn the Prusa Blog Mikolas Zuza, from Prusa, has stated:

Just give them a little while...
