MMU 2.0 Filament grinding at load to Extruder

Hi All!

I build my MMU2 unit about a week ago and put in on my freshly upgrade MK2.5
After this I have spend many frustrating hours trying to get it to work.

1)
First problem(?) is that during init the selector makes allot of noise pushing to the left and hitting the side.
Sometimes it does it succesfull init movement (withou hitting the side) sometimes not.......
During running this very loud init does not appear to really be a problem (is does select filament correctly)

2)
The main problem is that the fillament is grinding in the MM2 pulley at the moment of loading to the main extruder and causing the fillament to not be gripped anymore and causing the printer to hang
I have tried the following.
- did about 10 times the PTFE tube calibration length (between several adjustments)
- re-adjusted the Finda in between calls
- moving axiles a bit
- removed the razor blade
- many different things

I cannot get a succesfull print in multicolor print.
I have no problem with printing single color
I have printed with and without OctoPrint
Version of the printer and MMU is FIRMWARE 3.5.0 (V1.0.2)

I have the feeling that that could be a power supply problem to the MMU2 (?).
Because there are 2x2 small wires for the full current of the whole MMU2.
With 12volt this can get high quite quickly.
But this is a gues.

So main problem in the end is; filament is pushed to far into the main extruder.
Anyone any ideas because currently out of patient and time... 🙄 😥

Cheers

Hi there, got the same grinding filament problem with MK2.5, the MMU screw are 0.4mm below the plastic, PTFE lenght for the five filament are good (I did it a lot too)

I think the problem come from the "Loading speed at start" I try with 19 but nothing change.
2 Week trying to print something but expect for 2D+ Homer and a gyro in 2C, it's allways ending with Jam cause filament is grinding.

MMU V2 is like :

Yes i totally agree with you..

I have tried to calibrate the length of the PTFE tube to be more UP than down on the extruder (out of specs)
This causes that it sometimes does not grab it anymore.
I don't know why others have so much "succes" with running the MMU2......
Anyway, tonight i'll try to see if there is any difference using thicker supply wires to the MMU2.
Because if the steppers are missing steps it would result in weird behaviour.
Or i use a external power supply for this.

I think in the end it will turn out that the FINDA is not precise enough to give a accurate reading to make sure the filament is spoted at the right moment.
Perhaps it's also a better idea NOT to cut the filament on a angle of 45 degrees to make sure the tip hits the FINDA ball at the same moment as during reload.

In video's of others showing there MMU2 working i also notice the grinding sound during reload.
So perhaps this is normal???
If there is anybody who has more info/help please let us know!

For anyone reading this later on that has the grinding problem on the MMU2
I think many have this issue but perhaps don't realize it or have it less than i do. (different fillament?)
I have excepted the amount of grinding it does and i'm able to print now.
There are many good tips in this video.
For Slic3r settings:

The setting that are MMU2 specific can be optimized.
He also mentions that loading speed setting matter allot for handing the filament off to the primary extruder (check his note on his video):
*In the video I say that the two loading speeds do not matter, but come to find out that they are the reason why the filament hand-off between the MMU2 and the extruder works so smoothly now, so I would definitely use them. Also, these settings are heavily filament dependent and I am using an Olsen Ruby nozzle instead of the stock one, so your results can and will vary.

He also mentioned a important setting here:

Which is a negative value for "Extra loading Distance" which influences (most likely) the grinding.

THANKS! 0Calvin( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCabc8JlWEJnLnaB_wgmctxw ) for making this video!
It helped allot!

If anyone has any other info please let us know!!!! 😛

I can now confirm (after more multicolor prints) that these settings (as said by 0Calvin) are indeed heavily influencing if the MMU2 grinds filament.
Note that this can be highly linked to your filament type/brand!
I use InnoFill 3d filament.

So this are the settings:

Happy printing!
And please add new ideas here 😉

would like to add that i also changed this setting as said by 0Calvin.
If anyone know WHY this should be -13 please let us know!!
I can only see that it works better (?) when i have this on 0

Re: MMU 2.0 Filament grinding at load to Extruder

@andre.l9 has an interesting post about adjusting the filament calibration position along with the extra loading distance.

instead of aligning the filament to the middle of the gears, I align it to the extruder PTFE tube, I change also the Extra loading distance value in Slic3rPE (Printer setting--->MMU settings), setting the value to -8.

PLEASE NOTE! i found a error in my configuration.
Probably because i had the MMU1 this setting was wrong.
Please note that these are the setting i'm currently running with.
The speeds for cooling down the filament were to fast causing jams in the extruder.
So i changed them to settings that are similair to other PLA filaments.
