I bought both the i3mks3+ and the MMU2S - should I do a mks3+ print before upgrading to the mmu2s?

I am not a 3d printing noob, but I am new to Prusa.

I got the prusa primarily for the MMU2s.

Good engineering tells me test the base unit - then add on the MMU2s, and the impatient child tells me, just go ahead and upgrade and sort it out later.

Any advice?

Best Answer by K7ZPJ:

1) Build the printer including the extruder modifications for the MM2S.

2) Test the printer without the MMU2S to make sure it works perfectly.

3) Build the MMU2S and install it on the printer.

4) Take the time to get the adjustment for the extruder filament sensor work right.  If it isn't adjusted right, the MMU2S will never work.  Taking time on this step will save you hours of troubleshooting.  The adjustment on the Finda sensor is important too, but not as hard to get right as the filament sensor in the extruder.

Remember getting it done right is a lot more important than getting it done fast.

The MMU2 can be troublesome and it helps to understand your base unit well so you know where to put your hex screwdriver in when the machine is not doing what it should. But technically there is in my opinion no reason not to install both immediately 🙂

Thank you for helping me act like an adult.  My other printer does not have such sensors and so that's going to be some new hex twisting - good tip.

I am a noob and built both together. Much much cursing and wasted filiment later I found https://help.prusa3d.com/article/ir-filament-sensor-calibration-mmu2s_2245 and other articles in the mmu2s calibration section. All my sensors were off by the tiniest bit and it made for massive problems. It's also important to have filament in all five slots to even the tension access the idler which I wasn't doing. I use scrap pieces to keep tension even on mono filament prints now. Going over the proper sensor setup took two slow careful hours and instantly I am printing problem free with multiple colors.

Getting things working without the MMU2S is easiest I would imagine, but that won't save you headaches when you do add it unless you have all the sensors dialed in just right and the idler has nice even tension across all five feeds.
