I've tightened the idler door quite a lot and that seems to have helped. I still hear the occasional click, so not sure if the door should be even tighter?

I am experiencing a similar issue...  Clicking, grinding and jamming in the hot end.  Had a nice long talk (4 hours) with support last night and they ultimately decided that it was due to the fact that I am using E3D's titanium heat break, copper block and copper nozzle...  not looking forward to it but I will be returning the hot end to stock tonight ugh.  hopefully this will fix my issues.

Hey all,

going on second week after getting my MK3 and still facing some printing issues. Primarily, my biggest issue is that my extruder sometimes fails to push material down through the gears into the hotend. This results in failed prints such as these:

That's with Ivory Prusa PLA at default temperatures, .1mm layers, and reduced speeds. It isn't just the ivory it happens to, but all materials I try.

I'm able to usually identify the issue because I can hear clicking coming from the extruder, either caused by the motor skipping gear teeth or slipping over the material, I'm not sure which.

I have been able to get successful prints as long as they don't take more than an hour or two, but anything longer than that will fail. I've come across similar issues in other threads where overheating motor softens material and causes it to bunch up, but my filament doesn't bend and kink, and supposedly that issue was resolved by a firmware update (my firmware is completely up to date). Could something else be causing this? Has anyone else experienced similar issues?

EDIT:

After a quick chat with Shane from Prusa tech support chat, I switched out nozzles to a .4mm and made sure it was tightened all the way on according to [this video] ( ). It has to be very precise, keep the gap that exact size. I haven't had any more jams, but I'm apprehensive. Hoping this fixes things for now.

Issues are back and worse than before. Still looking for solutions.

You do not need to replace the coper heat block and nozzle. The problem is with the titanium heatbreak is slightly diferent from the version shipped with the prusa printers. on the prusa heatbreak, there is a smaller hole i think so it works better with MMU printing.

In the Prusa specific heatbreak there is a wider diameter up from the heat break (2.2mm), whereas original E3D is 2.0mm throughout.

I've updated my MK3 printer to use the E3D-V6 standard heat break and my jams have stopped.

The three common heat breaks are not the same: Only the Prusa version has a step in the cold/hot transition zone.

I had this issue occur with an older printer of mine that I donated to one of my inlaws. The issue in that case was the thermal break between the heater block and the heat sink was non-existent (cheap hotend clone).

The problem was that heat would work it's way up to the heat sink and then the drive gear assembly (all aluminum). This was enough to cause the plastic to deform ever so slightly and form a plug on the cold side. Before changing the hot-end it would only manifest after operating the printer for 45 minutes or so. 9Apps 9Apps VidMate VidMate app 

 After the change, the clicking went away. Not saying this is the cause of your issue - you have to do some detective work to see how you can replicate the issue which may help determine the root cause.

I had similar problems because the Bowden tube was touching the Bondtech gear, deforming it slightly.  This was not a problem when I was running without the MMU because that setup doesn't have to deal with imperfect filament tips.  I swapped out my Micro Swiss heatbreak, which has a slightly different internal geometry and doesn't allow the Bowden tube to seat as deeply.  In conjunction with upgrading the PTFE tubing running from my drybox to the filament buffer to 6mm OD, this eliminated frequent load failures and missed layers.

I have Prusa i3 derivative with MK8 extruder and Marlin 1.1RC8 as firmware. I already reduced the default speeds as well as the accelerations. But sometimes when trying to print with BQ PLA filament (220°C), mostly during filling areas, my extruder clicks. The below screenshot of Slic3rs Layers view shows the clicking "lines".

Having zero experience with your setup folks here will only be guessing.  Extruder clicks are often related to a design issue in the heat break; or printing with too low a temperature; or exceeding the filament or extruder volumetric flow spec.

We have roughly 5 zebra printers in some of the harshest industrial environments. Never have any issues.

for information : i experienced extruder gear clicking due to the fact that screws in the idler body (see picture) loosened.

not easy to identify, thanks to chris (i didn't find any other mention of this problem)
