Volcano Nozzle compatibility

Hello!

Sorry in advance for what might be a dumb question - I will be printing with abrasive filament and need to get a .6 hardened nozzle. Is the ESD Nozzle X Volcano ( https://www.prusa3d.com/product/nozzle-x-e3d-v6-0-6-mm/) compatible with the original MK3 hotend or do I need to upgrade the hotend to a Volcano?

Kindest regards,

Rich

The volcano hotend works with the normal heat sink and heartbreak. But the volcano is about 11mm longer. So your part fan and pinda need moving downwards. And you lose z height

Try phaetus dragon hi flow. Drop in replacement

Thank you Joan! - I was wondering if the nozzle would work on the original hotend. I see there are more threads on the Volcano but do I need to swap out the hotend to use this Volcano nozzle?

I am trying to print filament with carbon fiber and just need a hardened nozzle. Should I look at another nozzle besides the Volcano?

Rich

If you simply ned a hardened nozzle,
the Zaribo Nozzle Z is available in 0.4mm and 0.6mm diameter,
with Carbon filled filaments you are usually recommended to use 0.6mm nozzles

or E3d Nozzle X

or e3d CRB and Pro Nozzles

When you install the nozzle be very careful to ensure that the nozzle butts up against the heatbreak, and there is a tiny gap between the nozzle and the heatsink. or you will get a leak of filament between the heatbreak and the nozzle.

Hi Joan, My MK3s+ print head is in need of major repair and I am looking at changing it.  When you say drop in replacement, do you mean you can just substitute the heads with no printed part changes?  I feel this is a good time to upgrade the head.

RE: Volcano Nozzle compatibility

Hi Robin...
the answer is not quite as straight forward...

I got my phaetus dragon clone a long time ago, I saw the original version at the TCT Show in Birmingham UK, but couldn't  find a supplier, hence the clone version

it looked just like this, it used a standard prusa style thermistor and heater  and even came with a little orange circlip
the phaetus clone was the same in all dimensions, as the E3dV6, with the exceptions that the heater block was slightly different and the insertion depth for the PTFE cold end liner was different (Shorter)   so what I did was measure from the top of the old e3dv6 to the top of the protruding PTFE tube, and then cut the PTFE on the phaetus to protrude the same amount.
being slightly smaller, the heater block size was not an issue.
the total length of the phaetus was close enough to the e3dv6 that re running first layer calibration was enough to get a good first layer...

Try as I might, I could not get the orange circlip to fit inside the prusa plastics... since prusa didn't supply  a circlip, I didn't feel bad about not using the phaetus circlip
I hope you can find a similar hotend.

the e3d revo 6 is also a drop in replacement (Same issue with the PTFE length), prusa have a revo firmware to support the hotend and prevent thermal anomaly messages

regards Joan

RE: Volcano Nozzle compatibility

Joan, thanks.  I am looking at options for a better head instead of ordering spare parts, for the present head, which I hope to get working today.  I am not in a rush, I hope.  🙂

I think I would prefer a ceramic coil heater, so it may be a new head design.

Missed one simple instruction about temperature when replacing the nozzle, from the E3D web site, 20 degrees above the maximum temperature you are going to print.  Printing with ASA caused a small leakage that I didn't see until I removed the sock.  Now I know.
