Two nozzle fans

Hi friends,

I have noticed that my nozzle fan does not provide sufficient cooling for my more complex print jobs. I have upgraded the fan duct with Delta P to little benefit. I am thinking about using 2 nozzle fans. I have seen a design where two nozzle fans are used. My only concerned is if two fans are spliced together, wouldn't that lower the voltage for each fan and diminish the result?

RE:

Sounds risky!

The EinsyRambo "should" source enough current for two  normal, small sub-.5A  5v fans as the switching transistor is rated at 2A max and the 5v regulator "should" be sufficient.... But the tach signals should not be spliced together. The Einsy is going to expect a tach signal from only one fan.  Depending on the additional fan you choose there is some risk to the Einsy.

So the options are either splice to the ground and +5v wires of the original 5v 3-wire fan  or use a different power source such as tapping directly into the 24v supply with a 24v fan or tapping into the unused 5v port J7. Probably the "safest" route (for the Einsy) would be to use a 24v fan along with the original 5v speed-sensed fan, with the extra 24v fan wired to a manual switch or speed controller. If tapping into the PSU power, don't forget to use a fuse!

Of course if you're very adventurous you could look into repurposing unused pins somewhere in firmware but that's beyond my ability!

Sounds like an interesting adventure I'd rather avoid. Good luck!

RE: Two nozzle fans

Voltage should remain fairly constant. Available current draw will be somewhat diminished but these are fractional amperage devices so I imagine any impact will be marginal.

Perhaps someone who’s done this mod will chime in. I would go ahead and give it a try.

Good luck!

RE: Two nozzle fans

@chicago-Keri makes a good point.

It would be easy enough (and less risk prone) to use a fan with an independent power source.

Most of us have a bunch of 5v ice cube power blocks in a drawer somewhere if you don’t want to tap into the printer power supply. A 5v usb powered fan would be simple enough. Add a 3 speed on/off controller switch for some flexibility.
