To couple, or decouple…

Reading/ borrowing  from the world of industrial machine setup and hi-fi audio I’ve seen repeat mention of two approaches to vibration remediation.  

The first is to physically couple the machine (or speaker) to the heaviest thing you can find, usually the concrete floor.  Additionally people will fill speaker stands or machine bases with sand bags or lead shot to provide additional mass.  

The second option, which in my observation is less popular, is to decouple the machine (typically sensitive equipment in this case) from the floor or table on which it rests.  This could be done by the aid of machine spikes that rest in dimples on the floor.  

Finally, I’m aware of the argument that one needs to match the durometer (hardness/flex measure) of isolation mounts to match the mass of the machine.  For example, an infinitely heavy machine will render any pad useless, as would a infinitely light machine fail to befit from even the spongiest pads.  Just another bit to add, I’ve also seen arguments that the pad needs to be both above and below the ground anchor so as the machine rocks the side being lifted is pushed down while the side being pushed down is pushed up.

I put my printers on a heavy paver, with rigid feet for tight coupling, to create a large mass. Then in turn the paver/printer combo sits on the base of its enclosure on top of sorbothane feet. 

Seems to work well but mind you, I'm not a acoustics engineer, so what do I know.

Formerly known on this forum as @fuchsr -- until all hell broke loose with the forum software...

I’m using one of the squash ball feet solutions. Does a good job of reducing the vibrations and resonance from the wood topped desk the printer sits on.

Works for me.

Same here. The squash ball feet have done a great job in reducing vibration for me. These are the ones I'm using:

That’s the very same model I’m using. I like that the mounts are narrow and fit easily at all 4 corners.

I’m also using the double yellow dot squash balls. I thought they might be too firm but they seem to work well.

I see you used the suggested zip ties on yours. I just clipped mine on to test fit and never got around to the zip ties. Doesn’t seem to be a problem.
