Setting up Octoprint on MK3S

I just wanted to verify that instructions for setting up Octoprint on MK3S are the same as MK3.  The Prusa site has instructions for MK3, but none for MK3S.

Thanks.

I certainly did nothing special when I installed Octoprint on my MK3S.

Just select the MK3S as the printer profile you are using in Octoprint.

I also highly recommend the OctoLapse plugin, as well as the Firmware Updater plugin.

Do you have to use the Raspberry PI-Zero W?

I use a Pi 3B. A Pi 4 is overkill.

For a variety of reasons I would not recommend a Pi Zero.

One of them is that OctoPrint recommends not using it.

If I use a Pi 3, can I still connect it directly to the Einsy board per the Prusa instructions or do I have have it external and with its own power supply?

There are so many ways to skin a cat...

My Pi 3B is in a case mounted on the frame. It has a 6" USB cable running to the Einsi USB port.

I consider anything on the Einsy GPIO to be problematic. Others think differently.

Power is a different question. I use a buck converter tied to the PSU. Others say don't do that. Use a separate power supply.

I will only say I am extremely happy with my arrangement. I love watching my printer from my desk computer. Time lapse is a bonus.

Just keep in mind that making the device you use to monitor something dependent on that something can be a problem. I want my RPi or any other sensors doing monitoring to be separate to the extent possible so I can determine what's going on with the printer.

No, I'm using a Raspberry Pi 3b+ right now with no issues, the pi zero has the ability to mount directly onto the motherboard where as pi 3b has be used with the usb cable.  But the pi 3b has more power to run octopi and a webcam effectively.

Does anyone have the raspberry inside their printer enclosure?

I was originally considering doing the internal pi as described on the Prusa site. However the more I read the more I saw people complaining that pi zero didn’t have enough power for octoprint with video (Prusa even mentions this in their assembly instructions). So I decided to go with this solution, which will let me use a pi 3b and have a touch screen to boot.

I am on the bad list... My Pi 3B case is mounted to the MK3S frame right above the Einsy. It also holds a Buck Converter.

It runs off the Prusa PSU. (I do have a 350 watt ready to swap in, but have not needed it). I also run LED lighting and a Pi Cam.

All of this is in the Lack enclosure. I do leave one door open when printing PETG. Never had a power problem, and the Pi has survived being power cycled with the printer.

I recommend a pi fan for the Pi 3B. Inside my LACK enclosures, I would see a rare thermal CPU throttling warning icon. It never interfered with a print nor did I notice webcam streaming fail, but it was evidence that the Pi had been thermal limited. A Pi fan isn't much of a noise problem when inside an enclosure. Have not seen a thermal throttling warning since the fans were installed.

Thanks.  I may move mine in the enclosure.

The Pi case I printed had room for a fan, so I got one. Forgot to mention it...

That thing is so cute - and so well recommended - I had to get it.

Figured it would help with the extra heat put out by the buck converter.

Of the fan? Of the case? Of the fan in the case? Of the fan in the case mounted on the MK3s?

Of the fan in the case mounted on the MK3S in the Lack enclosure?

So many possibilities...

RE: Setting up Octoprint on MK3S

My case did not have space for a pi fan. No matter. Bolted it outside the grill. Only gotchas were positioning fan rearward to avoid x-motor collision and needing to shorten its connector plastics to fit inside case. That took pulling the connector pins, slicing the plastic housing and putting pins back in.

I used these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C9H9LJN They are not quiet fans. Fine inside an enclosure, but would be annoying out in the open.
