Revo Six on MK3S+ has extra stringing and oozing

I installed the Revo Six on my MK3S+ today. All went well and the upgrade is pretty straight forward.

I've done a bunch of test prints and they all print as well as the original hotend. But what I've noticed is more oozing and stringing than what I was getting with the original setup. It's nothing terrible, but is very noticeable and requires the heat gun to clean up. I thought it might be my modified print profiles that are based on the Prusa defaults, but even after going back to the standard Prusament PLA and PETG profiles(and printing with fresh spools of both) I still get a bit more oozing and stringing than before.

I tried dropping the temps gradually down to 200c for the PLA, it helped a small amount but the part was pretty easy to break so I guess that's a non runner. I have of course done a fresh PID tune after the install, checked that everything is installed correctly and the ptfe insert is the correct size etc.

I do have a custom cooling shroud that uses 2 fans, so its not 100% stock. But i swapped the original shroud back in as a test, same oozing and stringing.

Anyone else noticed this or similar issues with the Revo?

RE: Revo Six on MK3S+ has extra stringing and oozing

Hello,

i do not own the Revo yet but will buy one as soon as hardened nozzles are available.

You talk about a lot of things you tried, but nowhere i find "i dried the filament" 😀

Stringing - especially with PETG - is primarily caused by not dried filament. With really dry PETG filament you need no heat gun.

It seems the Revo has a longer heat zone and higher melt capacity than the original hotend and so more molten filament volume is inside the nozzle and this might amplify stringing and oozing.

But again, if your filament is dry, i think no stringing will occurr.

If you do not want to dry your filament, you can try to increase retraction. I would prefer drying.

Yes I dried the PLA and PETG in my Eibos filament dryer for a few hours as soon as I had the issue and it was the same. It should be dry anyway as they were new sealed spools of Prusament. The only brand I buy that seems to need drying out of the box is Eryone PETG, Prusament so far has been good and I've gone through a lot of it on my print farm.

I've tried retraction from 0.8mm-1.8mm with various retraction speeds and it seems to be the same or worse. I'll just keep testing and see if i can work it out.

Good to Know. I have a Revo Six on the way.

Sorry for my poor English. I try to do my best.

RE:

Only very slight stringing noticed on a Prusament PETG Benchy on a Revo 6 using a standard extruder.  The Prusament is  about a year old but spent some time in a dehydrator.

Oddly, the stringing was not in the wheelhouse but lower down and aft of the wheelhouse by the back of the boat.  Barely noticeable, maybe 3 very fine strands.  But this is using a Moons stepper on the Extruder.

RE: Revo Six on MK3S+ has extra stringing and oozing

Replaced the nozzles on both my MK3S+'s with Revos a couple of weeks ago. Did it according to all the directions and did PID tunings per the instructions.

For the last year I have used the Prusament PETG filament settings in Prusaslicer using both Inland and Prusament Filaments... Both printed flawlessly.

Since changing the hotends, I have experienced extreme oozing and stringing... to the point that my prints are unrecognizable and unusable. Also, because of this, I am seeing some under extrusion because everything is running out of the nozzle which also makes my skirt thin and difficult to remove from the bed. This is all using new rolls of filament so this isn't a moisture issue.

I started lowering the nozzle temps in an attempt to resolve this but I'm looking to see what others might have experienced and what they did to resolve it.

Thanks

Just an update on this.

I've installed the Revo on 3 more MK3S+ machines to see if it was just a one off or maybe a faulty unit(I've 30+ of them in my farm). On all machines they show more stringing and oozing than stock V6 when using either the default Prusa profiles or my own tweaked ones.

I tweaked my own profiles a bit, and while I still get a bit more stringing and oozing than the standard V6 I've reduced it down to almost nothing by changing the retraction (retraction length of 1.3mm and retraction speed of 60mm/s and detraction of 50mm/s).

Not ideal as I prefer to have the default retraction at no more than 1.1mm, but this works for now and no issues with print quality or jamming etc.  This is on the standard Revo 0.4mm nozzle, for the 0.25mm I go with 1.1mm retraction @ 45mm/s.

Another update. I got on to E3D and they sent me another HeaterCore. I've installed it and have about 25 hours printing on it. So far there is a lot less oozing and stringing(only tested PLA and PETG). It's not all gone, but is the same as the old V6 was on my MK3S+.

Not sure what the actual problem was in the end, but the heater core has fixed it for now.

Any updates on this? I have 2x REVOs sitting in the boxes.  How have they been performing with the .25s? Any difference in quality?

I have 5 Prusas and wanted to try out the new Revo. Same profiles, same printers, same filament and only the one I changed to the Revo is having pretty bad stringing. I changed out the nozzle and fans just to make sure it wasn't them. Filament is multiple rolls of brand new esun pla+. I'm almost certain the issue is the Revo and nothing else.

RE: Revo Six on MK3S+ has extra stringing and oozing

I've now got Revo Six installed on 12 MK3S+ machines running pretty much 24/7 and have worked a lot on my profiles. I've got them to at least as good stringing as the original V6, possible even better.

For the standard 0.4mm nozzle my retraction settings are now 0.4mm @60mm/s(both retract and detract), 0.2mm Z lift, minimum travel after retraction @ 1mm with retract on layer change and wipe set to on.

I did have to change a few things on the filament side. So Prusament PETG is now on an extrusion multiplier of 0.98 and most other brands(Eryone, Sunlu, Formfutura, 3DJake) running at 0.95-0.97. Most PLA brands seem fine at the standard 1.0 multiplier.

Prusament PETG seems to print best @238c, with my default temps for other PETG brands between 225c and 230c. PLA(Prusament and other brands) seems fine with 210c.

Good stuff.  I have 2x Revos sitting in the boxes waiting to be installed.  I print mostly with .25 nozzles with PETG. Has anything changes with your .25mm settings?

RE: Revo Six on MK3S+ has extra stringing and oozing

I installed mine a few months ago did some prints and it worked, I haven't used my printer for a while and now the stringing is really bad... I though oh water got in my filament so I dried it and tried again... no luck... so I decided to print a stringing tower just to see... and it was terrible... stringing from the bottom at the way up to the top... I have also noticed that while watching the temps go up to print temperature it now does something strange... goes to about 130 and then jumps to 160 then to 240 and back down to 210 in a few seconds... I tried to do another PID calibrate but it did it there as well... I contacted E3D hopefully its just a bad heater cartridge or something...

Getting a new heater core, and your retraction settings made the difference between abject failure and literal perfection.

Thank you.

I've this same problem, and it's really bad. I also have temp sensor showing wrong temperatures. @ 150 celsius (showed on the screen) the real temperature were 160 degrees on the tip of the nozzle and around it. @ 170 degrees the real temperature were 172 degrees. When temperature which i wanted got higher, the throw in the real temperature got even higher too.  I measured these with FLIR thermal camera. Previously when i've done this with original hotend, numbers have been pretty much what is showed on the screen.

Dropping temperatures during print have saved couple prints for me. I've tried also tweak the settings in prusa slicer, but haven't found anything which works for my printer.
I've also had problems with thermal runaway, even if i've made PID-tuning several times. I've changed my hotend fan too couse i thought that might be the problem, but it wasn't.

Thinking about to change the old hotend back...

Sorry i meant when i wanted the hotend to be at 170, it really was 182!

I tried your settings, but that was even worse.

Tried more than 30 different settings and combinations. I'm just annoyed and will switch back to stock.

RE: Revo Six on MK3S+ has extra stringing and oozing

I am a bit afraid now. 😨
Just ordered the Revo after destroying my current heatbreak.
It sounds like there are a lot of faulty heater-units around. 😕 Hope mine will be fine.

One thing though:
Has anyone of you checked the linear advance settings?
https://help.prusa3d.com/article/linear-advance_2252

A false LA-setting can also lead to stringing.
For the V6 the default values in PrusaSlicer are very well tuned for PLA and PETG (I came to exactly the same values in my tests).
Maybe the Revo needs a bit more because of the slightly longer heat-zone?
