Open Source knob

I designed a new knob for the Prusa to look like the Open Source logo.  My printer hasn't shipped yet so I can't print this myself, yet.  I'll add it to the library once I know it fits and works.  Anyone feel like squeezing one out?

I edited the title to reflect open source instead of reprap, but didn't interfere with the Zipfile details. (Joan.t Moderator)

RE: RepRap knob

The RepRap logo is a teardrop shape. This looks like the Open Source Hardware logo 🙂

Doh!  Thank you.  That's what I meant but couldn't edit it.  Do you think this will look good on the MK3?

I do like the look and the teeth will make turning it easier, but I am not sure about the center part where you need to press.

Thanks Joan for the name change and DFM suggestions.  Here's a revised model requiring (hopefully) no support.

I'm new to this, so someone please provide some insight here ... what's wrong with adding supports?  It's on the bottom and would never be seen.  Just curious, what's wrong with requiring supports?  It was easy to revise/improve the model, just curious for future designs.

RE: Open Source knob

Supports waste material, extend print time and are often a hassle to remove. It's better to avoid them if possible.

@smoking_rubber

If a model needs supports, a novice printer is likely to miss that on the first attemps and obtain a poor result, or perhaps a failure.

if you use supports the underside of the model in the supported area is often dissapointing.

I prefer to try and design models without supports or with supports that make little impact on the model surface.
sometimes I will build sacrificial supports into the model so they are exactly where I want them.

Recently I made some display brackets to hold a fire arm on the wall,
I couldn't think of a simple way to make them look pleasing and not need supports, so I elected to place the model at 45degrees so that the the supports were more like stabilisers and didn't cause disturbance to the surface during the build. I simply broke the models off the supports and fitted them to the wall... 🙂 Nice...

@smoking_rubber

so... I only had TPU in Black to go with my pinky Red...
So I went for my own colour scheme...

Unfortunately, the spindle hole is a tiny bit tight...
What size did you make it?
regards Joan

Joan,

I love it!  That was quick.  Seeing something you designed actually get made is always a treat.  I've been designing and injection molding plastic parts for 25 years and I can tell you it never gets old.

I used .2323" diameter, which I got off a thingyverse knurled sample.  I should have figured Prusa would go with 6mm (.2362).  I'll open it up a tad.  What do you suggest?

Do you have a MMU or did you just pull and change the filament at the top.  Layer height and infill?
