Questions and thoughts on a Prusa MK3 CoreXY

Hello, I'm a product design student(bachelor) and future a MK3 owner(hopefully) and I've looked at printers, watched a lot of videos and most importantly 3D printed a lot of stuff, but there's something that has peaked my interest: Hypercube printers.

I really want to build a hypercube 3D printer based on the prusa MK3, since the MK3 is a smarter than average printer with a good community and excellent print quality out of the box/kit. I have no experience with custom scratch built 3D printers, so I'm wondering if you guys could fill me in on what problems I'll encounter and most of all the pros and cons if I were to turn an i3 into a hypercube.

my reasoning for doing this is:
reduced vibrations, thus higher speeds achievable, less ghosting, higher overall quality of prints and better bed adhesion.
and since it's an MK3 turned cube, it retains the smart features.(in theory)
The frame would also act as an enclosure when covered in plates, making it take up less space due to not needing a separate enclosure.

I can also increase the build volume by making a taller frame with less consequences, thus "outperforming" the schools printers (except for the ultimaker 3).

Edit: so, after digging through heaps of information on the subject of Hypercubes and CoreXy printers I've found out that the prusa firmware might not be compatible with the CoreXy setup...

Re: Questions and thoughts on a Prusa MK3 CoreXY

Have you tried the following:
- Get the MK3 Source code from the MK3 Branch at https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware
- Add the Rambo Board in the Arduino IDE ( https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ultimachine/ArduinoAddons/master/package_ultimachine_index.json )
- uncomment #define COREXY on line 212 in Configuration.h
- comment #error BABYSTEPPING not implemented for COREXY yet. on line 274 in Configuration_adv.h

It should compile now and you could start from there.
Maybe port in the BABYSTEPPING stuff for CoreXY from Marlin?

Keep us informed of your progress / troubles.

Cheers,
Timo

I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious

RE: Questions and thoughts on a Prusa MK3 CoreXY

I'm also interested in turning my mk3s into a hypercube printer. Sadly, I don't have any idea if it would work or not and was wondering if you made any progress regarding the topic.

Cheers,

Guy
