Question about enclosure for MK3

Hello,

It's my first post on this forum and I hope not the last.

I'm thinking about change my old 2YO Chinese printed for a Prusa i3 MK3S+ (for better accuracy and reliability)

My only request is: will it fit into my enclosure?

The inside dimentions are: 47 x 56,5 cm (height is not a problem: 62cm)

Spool holder will not be used, power supply will be remoted in a shell bellow and display can be remoted too if needed.

I found a lot of peoples speaking about the size of the printer but not the minimum inside size of the enclosure without spool and power supply.

Keeping my enclosure is mandatory for me (WAF, light + smoke detector + octoprint + camera + spool holder)

Can someone help?

Thanks

RE: Question about enclosure for MK3

Hi there -

It will be tight but should work. The depth of the printer is 56.5, and that is including the room that the cable for the bed heating element needs at the back when the table is moved all the way back without giving you trouble. If you would remote the display/control panel unit you'd save 1.5 cm. Not more because when the table is all the way forward, it slides partly over the display/control unit and the remaining difference is only 1.5cm. Removing the power supply is not going to make any difference.

The width of the printer is 43 cm. So with your 47cm you should be ok. Height should be indeed not be a problem in your case.

Assuming it is 47cm wide (X axis) and 56,5cm deep (Y axis), then yes, a MK3S+ will fit.  The IKEA Lack table that gave rise to the Lack Enclosure, is 55cm x 55cm.  At 55cm, it is just deep enough to fit the print and allow for full movement of the Y axis, so if your enclosure is 56,5cm deep, then you should not have any issue with the printer fitting.

Thanks a lot for your answers.

I choost IKEA BESTÅ instead of IKEA LACK because the finish is more"professionnal" from my point of view and completly integrated in my office.

With the Prusa it will be really professional 😉

Looks good but don't you have to install the printer sideways?

Yes it is, the enclosure is 56,5 cm large and 47 cm depth.

It's not a big deal to install sideways (for my actual creality printer, I disconnect the display, doing everything by octoprint)

About the power supply, I remote it only for temperature concerns (all the electrical parts are bellow with the RPi Pi, relay box, fuses, ...)

In case of trouble I only have 1x XT90 connector + 1x USB and the printed can be picked up from the enclosure for maintenance/repair.

The shelf of spool have a dessicant system, bellow it there is a smoke detector controlled by home diy automation and who can cut off power supply and send me an email.

I really like this setup and don't want to change. 😀

RE:

A few things being late to the party:

1) How has this been working out for you?  I ask since I will soon be looking to enclose mine.

2) I would think it would be a bit cumbersome taking the steel plate on and off from the side

3) Why remote mount the power supply because of temperature concerns when the table and hot end will be the primary temperature drivers.  Are you doing anything to keep the closed cabinet from overheating?

Hello,

1)  Perfectly (except my Ender 3 is not "strong enouth" for my use)

2) For the moment, I just use a spatula (glass bed), I do not have any troubles event with "big" print +200mm high

Not sure it will made a big difference with removable steel plate, it should be easier.

3) First for noise issue (I install a big noctua fan wich is very ugly), second to bring all electrical 230VAC stuff in the same place, third to reduce the risks or filament/debrit/dust coming inside power supply.

I prepare a fan system to reduce the "power supply box" temperature, but finally, even if the enclosure can heat till 40/50°C inside, the "power supply box" was never higer than 40°C (probably thanks to the natural flow of air and the big fan.

Here is how it's look like bellow:

I just ordered this unit, still waiting for printer to be delivered, I line the unit in silver sarking. https://www.ple.com.au/Products/633879/Hypertec-Wall-Mount-Enclosed-9RU-600W-X-600D-X-500H-Server-Cabinet.I did the same for my Prusa Mini works perfect.

RE: Question about enclosure for MK3

I agree that looks great. In fact, you've inspired me 😀. I've wanted to build a larger new enclosure for a while now. One that I could add sound proofing to as well because I print at night and although the printer is fairly quiet, I have family members with super hearing!

So, I looked into the IKEA Besta. I didn't want the printer sideways, so I decided to buy the 39.5cm deep one as well as the 20.5cm deep one. I didn't install the back of the larger one and placed the smaller one behind the larger one. Effectively building en enclosure that is 58x56x58 (HxWxD). As you can see on the picture I have added fairly thick soundproofing but the printer fits. I also have the 5 filament feeds through the back down to the lower cupboard where I have a airtight box with the filament rolls hidden away. The whole thing looks very snazzy. All I need to do now is to install some LED lighting and a temperature fan (regarding that: can someone advise me what the max enclosure temperature is?).

RE: Question about enclosure for MK3

Thomas, some of the printer's parts are made of PETG, which Prusa's specs say is good up to 80C.

I'd be surprised if any of the electronics are rated lower than that.

Good!

My first inspiration was this guy:  https://github.com/PrusaMK2Users/MK2_Tips_and_Tricks/wiki/IKEA-LACK-STUVA-enclosure

But I didn't want to extend the back of the IKEA stuva.

I start with the same idea but the highest frame available and a glass door only for the printer.

My custom modifications are: spools are stocked at the top with a dehydrator and a https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5178648 (much easier to load/unload than wardrobe), 230V plug integrated in the side with ON/OFF button and fuse.

Printing sideways is not a big deal, specially with magnetic bed.

My only regret is that the prusa is louder than my custom Ender 3.
