OctoPrint Relationship to Prusa Printer?

I am new to this and in no hurry to make things more complicated.  But I really don't care for the display on my Prusa MK3S.  And the main reason for that is the filenames display.  It's just way to narrow/short.

So I have been looking at OctoPrint but fear that it may do too much.  I sort of now know how to navigate the menus on the printer and don't want to have to learn a new menu navigation at this point.  (Maybe later.)

So ... does OctoPrint take over the console function or can it be used along side the Prusa console?  If it takes over, does it display the same info in the same format (except for longer lines) and use the same menus or does it use different menus?  (The OctoPrint site has some screen shots but none which correspond to the basic menu used to select which stl file to print)

Thanks,  Bob

It is (mostly) in parallel with the LCD menu. Think of OctoPrint as more of a print job manager. Great for kicking off an managing jobs. You can so some printer management functions, but basic printer functionality is (mostly) still handled with the printer menu.

Managing print jobs is one area where OctoPrint shines. You can view and sort print jobs, and start and stop them easily. However, OctoPrint does not readily support printing directly off the SD card in the printer and vice-versa. The files OctoPrint display are stored on the OctoPrint storage (microSD card usually) while those on the printer are on the SD card inserted into the printer LCD board. While OctoPrint can interact with the SD card, this functionality is very (very very) limited and slow. That said, I don't find any disadvantage to using OctoPrint's storage.
