Re: OctoPrint on MK3?

I am going for the “official” Pi camera

https://thepihut.com/products/raspberry-pi-camera-module?variant=758603005&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxcuBvLC51wIVDxIbCh0uLgp8EAQYBSABEgIIgPD_BwE#fo_c=1889&fo_k=2b686ab56474e4ce56fa1e8eb397b767&fo_s=gplauk

But i have seen a Rev1.3 on eBay which looks very similar but does not have a Sony sensor, so i dont know how it will perform.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FIT-Raspberry-Pi-1-3-Camera-Fast-Module-Board-5MP-Webcam-Video-1080p-720p/322829794918?epid=588887289&hash=item4b2a27be66:g:qPQAAOSwB-1Yz3YO

I do think its a shame that these cameras use a flat ribbon cable and no-one has come up with a round version to make routing it a littler easier and neater.

Re: OctoPrint on MK3?

Simple question...

What size and speed SD card will be "optimal" for a octoprint implementation?

How fast does a micro SD card need to be? The RepRap Wiki seems to indicate:
>SD-Card (it should be fast, so go for a Class 10)

Will a older slower card be appreciably slower, enough for this application "in use" (not just setup) to be worth locating a fast card for?

Currently, based on a tutorials recommendation for a 8GB card, I have a 8GB SDHC class 6 card slated for installation. Too old and slow for the task?

Strangely I only have the correct amount needed for all my various devices requiring them, and simply purchase a new large one when needed, shifting all smaller cards down the chain like a hermit crab exchange

I saw on a tutorial video that a minimum of 16gb was recommended. You can pick up a good 32gb class 10 card for less than $12 USD, assuming you live in the states. Why not pick up a better card if you're dropping $$ on a good printer?

FYI, if you use the pi zero, get the adapter cable for it... I just found out the hard way.

Can yo expand on that? What adapter cable? Is this for the camera? Or do you mean the one for the Mini to full sized USB?

Edit.. I worked it out:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/zero-grows-camera-connector/

So clearly there is an adaptor to convert to the original "course" cable, to the fine pitched one used on the Zero. Thanks for the tipoff.

Here is what we need

But 30 cm might not be long enough, and I haven't found a long cable for it. Maybe if you mount it on the left side, but the bed is 21 cm + length to camera and to board... I have to do more research. I may be repurposing another pi3 for this in the meantime.

This should help, use the small cable and this adapter/joiner to allow you to use the longer cables. At least that's my plan...

There are also hdmi adapters. So one can use round hdmi cables.

Re: OctoPrint on MK3?

Hi There,

My first 3d Printer and I choose the MK3. I am waiting for it to arrive and plan on installing the octoprint Zero W board. I would like to add the camera as well so I was looking for extended flex cables to work. I found these ....

https://www.amazon.com/Makerfocus-Raspberry-Camera-Cable-Ribbon/dp/B0748DPHYQ/ref=pd_cp_421_3?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=VRZTV34NTG41SNQTTZ7M&th=1

These should be long enough to place the camera in a good spot. Maybe someone will make a shielded round cable version as well. To long of cable and you may induce noise into the video.

I assume that you can use the 8Mb pixel camera on this Zero W, MK3 system?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ER2SKFS/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Looking forward to the MK3 printing experience!

Cheers,
Rob

From my research so far:
1) yes, 8MP camera works with pi zero
2) noise happens at shorter distance with 8MP camera (~4ft or 4m vs 8ft or 8m) Sorry don't remember the distance, but its longer than what matters for our application
3) HDMI cables will allow you to go further than using the flex cable extender without loss of signal.
4) I don't think 1 30cm cable will be long enough. The Einsy board is on the left, pi zero mounted higher end of it. You need to run the cable out of the case, under the printer at least the length of the bed of 21cm and then up to the camera which will be elevated off the printer a few cm. I just don't think 1 cable will be long enough. I purchased 2 18' cables for my 2 printers. My pi on the first printer is mounted under the desk so I just need it to go the length of the Ikea end table. I can relocate that pi though to inside the box if it isn't long enough, but I would need to get a fan for it as I don't want to overheat it.

Does the camera have to be on the bed? Could it not be close to the Pi? Looking down at the bed?

Sure, but if you want sweet timelapse videos which Octoprint is awesome for, then you will want it on the bed. This way you get to see the objects stationary and build up vs a blur going back and forth. For the sole purpose of monitoring a live print, it doesn't matter.

I still figured that if it were mounted looking down, you could still do a timelapse, but just from a different perspective.. It wouldn't be looking straight down.. But somewhere between the Pi and the Bed...

He goes over why you want to bed mount vs frame mount for timelapse.

Ahhh.. I see.. So for a Pi, not Pi Zero?

I am not sure whether there is a long cable for the Zero, so for now, I am not sure whether we are going to get much flexibility on the location of camera.

He goes over why you want to bed mount vs frame mount for timelapse.

Right after I replied yesterday I looked at some videos and immediately noticed the difference and realised the need to mount the camera to the bed.

I like the idea of Time-Laps but I suspect the novelty will wear off, and really want to use the camera for monitoring, so I might just stick with the 30cm cable and mount it looking down.

Then, one day if a longer cable appears for the Pi Zero, I could re-visit this and move the camera.
