Only DisplayLayerProgress installed - Shift.

I can confirm that removing this plugin fixed my issues as well.

Interesting. So, I’m not the only one. :).
I want to add that after removing DisplayLayerProgress, but leaving Dashboard running, my layer shifts became rare but still happened occasionally. After also removing Dashboard, the shifts went away completely.

I wonder what these plugins do to create the shift. I still think there must be some interaction with hardware (either printer or RPi), because I ran with both of them enabled for months without shifts before this problem started happening.

Isn't that plugin required by the Dashboard? The dashboard is nice, but I can live without it for more reliable prints.

Dashboard will run without DisplayLayerProgress, but won’t show layer info and will complain about it. I’m with you, it’s a nice plugin, but not worth suffering print defects.

Ah, makes sense. I've seen the complaint messages. I'm disabling dashboard for the time being.

@mdaneman and @axion

Thank you for posting about this and your experience with resolving it.  I've been dealing with a random, small X layer shift since last september that shows up once or twice a print.  Incredibly frustrating and I've done the complete hardware run-through--replacing linear bearings, playing with belt tension (in good values), retightening screws... even got prusa support involved and they replaced my motherboard as well.  Even did the MK3S upgrade since it forces an extruder bearing rebuild.

I've used displaylayerprogress since back then and never even though to check in on the Octoprint side.  I was watching a stutter the other day when I was doing something in TouchUI and started wondering about Octoprint as a cause.. then searched and found this thread.  I haven't confirmed yet that it is a fix for me since I just this second found this thread.. but it fits my situation so perfectly I'm pretty confident that this will solve it.

Just to update.. going on two days of no more issues with multiple prints.  Looks like this was it.  Went ahead and removed Dashboard too just out of an abundance of caution.

Just to add another voice, disabling DisplayLayerProgress resolved a layer shift issue I have been chasing since January.  Two weeks of printing confirm disabling this single plugin on a Pi3b running a very large number of plugins 100% eliminated the issue.  I was running v1.17 most recently and saw there is a newer v1.18 but did not try updating.  Has anyone re-enabled and tried the newer version?

RE: Octoprint issues - layer skipping, print pausing

Hi,

first of all, thank you for your effort!
I updated OctoPrint to 1.4 two days ago. As usual I wanted to print something and prepared everything. First layer and so on looked great. I let it do it's thing and decided to take a closer look when it's done. I did monitor via the camera and OctoRemote (Smartphoneapp).
The closer look revealed some layer shifts in Y-direction. Well okay... I tried it again, just to get some more layer shifts.
I checked the stats on the printer regarding crashes. Yep there happened some. Interesting thing.. crashes in X-direction were logged but they didn't result in a X-layershift. Oh I didn't had any issues  before! Found no issues with the printer itself. I followed this guide -> https://www.prusa3d.com/layer-shifting/ .
@axion I guess I heard a similiar noise, but when I checked the printer was doing fine.

I just was about to print from sd-card from now on but I'll try to print via OctoPrint without DisplayLayerProgress.
I'll come back to let you know what solution fixed mine. I'll try to change one by one so I can nail it down what was causing the issue.

Some facts:
OctoPrint 1.4 running on Pi4b
DisplayLayerProgress 1.18
DashBoard 1.11.3 (update 1.11.4 is there but fixes an issue with Average Layer Time https://github.com/StefanCohen/OctoPrint-Dashboard/releases/tag/1.11.4 )
Firmware MK3s 3.8.1-2869

RE: Octoprint issues - layer skipping, print pausing

Update:
Removed DisplayLayerProgress (uninstall with deletion of data)

Printed a rather small model ( https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/918 ) with 0.1 layer height to get a higher layer count.
Print came out very well. No layer shift! Also there were no crashing noises.
Down side... as some of you mentioned DashBoard complains because of the missing DLP addon.
In addition PrintJobHistory ( https://github.com/OllisGit/OctoPrint-PrintJobHistory ) also complains.
Oh and more a sidenote... the error count (error statistics mk3s) shows the same numbers as before the print. It should be zero for the last print?

I'll do some more prints in the next few days to check to be sure!
I'm not sure if somebody noticed already, @mdaneman opened up an issue in the github repo of DisplayLayerProgress. https://github.com/OllisGit/OctoPrint-DisplayLayerProgress/issues/124

RE: Octoprint issues - layer skipping, print pausing

I've finally stripped my OctoPrint install back to pretty much the basics. I want good prints first and foremost. So long as I can check on prints and stop jobs when needed, it's doing what I need. I don't need the dashboard or statistics.

Hey guys

I got exactly the same problems. I wasted so much PETG and time trying to fix the problem. I also disassembled and reassembled the X and Y axes. So frustrating. While searching for an solution I found this thread. I can confim that the plugin causes the problem. Did anyone of you tried out an older version of the DisplayLayerProgress Plugin?

OctoPrint DisplayLayerProgress releases

For analysing the problem it would be interessting to compare the Pi Model, Octoprint Version and Plugin Version

-Pi3 B+

-DisplayLayerProgress 1.18.1

-Octoprint 1.4.0

RE: Octoprint issues - layer skipping, print pausing

Hi to everybody,

Looks like I am not experiencing layer shifts, always on Y-axis btw on my side. It ONLY happened when printing circles for me. A typical example, it was impossible for me to print Lack Enclosure part tube that goes from Filament support to i3mk3s printer. It always failed when coming from Octoprint. Of course, printing from SD is fine.

I am quiet a bit disappointed about Octoprint. The solution seems to be unreliable with installed plugins. I use it mainly for convenient start through network and remote check. But now, I don't trust this solution anymore as it is causing too many print failures, and waste of filament.

I will keep it for monitoring purpose but only print from SD. I will disable DisplayLayerProgress  and Dashboard plugins. Which makes the overall Octoprint solution less appealing...

Octoprint runs on Raspberry 3B+.

RE: Octoprint issues - layer skipping, print pausing

been trying to use octoprint via usb for over a week and every-time the print would stop after a few mins. changed the baud connection rates, auto, etc and no dice.

then i read about disabling plugins and going back to stock as possible...it seems to getting there... printed over octoprint on sd card and it completed.

RE: Octoprint issues - layer skipping, print pausing

You ABSOLUTELY must try safe mode if you encounter problems. If that works, you know it's a plugin issue. The plugins are user contributed, and not subject to Gina's usual QC process with the main Octoprint code. Saying Octoprint is unreliable because of a plugin is like saying a Prusa Mk3 is unreliable because you used no-name filament. Since disabling extraneous plugins, all of my prints have gone flawlessly, including a full bed of PPE protective mask chin supports over 12 hours. I've been printing almost continuously for over a week and Octoprint is a major part of my workflow.

RE: Octoprint issues - layer skipping, print pausing

Hi,
I am the Plugin-Author of DisplayLayerProgress-Plugin... now I want to add my two cents here:

- First OctoPrint-Server is development by a single person
- OctoPrint-Server is able to include custom developed plugins to enhance the functionality
- Round 200 plugins are available for free
- Allmost all plugins were developed by highly motivated developers for free in there spare time
- Each User has a different printer and setup. So, also a developer has probably only one or few printers...and maybe not a Pursa (like me)
- Use the tip from @bobstro: Start OP in safe-mode to locate the issue a little bit deeper.
- It is always helpful to get in contact with the plugin author to discuss the problem (create an issue)
- Also provide support during "bug-hunting" (you, as a prusa-owner has this problem and maybe not the plugin-author with his ANET 😉

Please be aware of this and think twice before you writing sentence like this:
...quiet a bit disappointed about Octoprint...I don't trust this solution anymore...

Coming back to the mentioned issue:

- I released a new version 1.19.0. See https://github.com/OllisGit/OctoPrint-DisplayLayerProgress/releases/tag/1.19.0
- In this version I changed the behaviour for processing the gcode. It is now done in an async way, so there should be no delay during sending gcode to the printer.

Now you can start with the above mentions point "support during "bug-hunting""
Because it is just an assumption, please test and give me a feedback (use ticket https://github.com/OllisGit/OctoPrint-DisplayLayerProgress/issues/124 or raise a new one).

Only in this way I can improve the plugin and increase the joy of working with a (Prusa) 3D-Printer

Thx, in advance
Olli

Olli,

Thanks a lot for being responsive to user issues. I’m the one who originally posted the issue on GitHub. My printer is currently a bit busy printing face shields, but I’ll give the new version a try as soon as I have some time.

@ollisgit

Hello Ollisgit,

It looks like you are replying to my comment ...

It might sound a bit harsh but you also have to understand user's frustrations. After starting an 3d print which take dozens of hours and finally discover layer shifts after many hours of prints and try again, and fail again ... and looks for help and support on forum. Read similar user experiences.  And the only proposed solution by the community is to 1) run Octoprint on Safe Mode 2) disable guilty plugins.

I don't know which plugins is/are was/were responsible of print failures but based on user's comments above DisplayLayerProgress plugin was mainly pointed out. That's a fact.

So, now I am glad to see you have released a newest version 1.19. I installed it and I am not on Safe Mode anymore. Trust me to advertise your new version if no more layer shifts occur. I think you have made the right change by switching to asynchronous versus synchronous.

And my last comment, don't believe I don't recognize effort to make such development. I am also a developer.

Many thanks for your contribution.

F.

I consider the bug fixed. Printed now for around 18h with no single layer shift!

Thank you!

@ollisgit

I'd like to remind everyone that this plugin is FREE as is OctoPrint so I think you are beholden to be very careful how you ask for help and the tone you use. I'm sure OllisGit can speak for himself but if I were him I'd delete the plugin and tell you all to go to hell.

Just an example of what I mean by tone, when writing up tech support requests I had guys who started with "The client claims ..." or "The client alleges ..." when they should have said "The client reports ...". Not a big change, the meaning remains but the tone is completely different.
