Re: New toy from bondtech

It's too expensive for me. If my extruder motor dies after warranty expires, I will think about this upgrade. But as long as everything is still working fine, the printer will be used for the purpose it was bought.
It looks like it's a new thing to print the perfect layers and I understand how addictive it can be 🙂

That looks nice, had to watch Chris W old livestream from new years eve.. Aaand could not resist as it made in my country and what looks like great community mods.

Ordered one exactly at midnight last night and it shipped now 😀 was expecting a couple of weeks.

Forgot to do the research, is this nylon fan nozzle able to survive printing PC? My stock one melted (not R3) so i had to print one in PC.

I pulled the trigger on this anyway. There's no reason why this wouldn't be a solid upgrade for the printer. I'll plan installing this around some new Misumi rods and bearings, Gates belts, and maybe a Bear frame.

Have not even installed mine yet, and now there is a new filament sensor that I will want to install with the MMU2 upgrade. Hopefully Bondtech comes out with the redesign quickly.

Agreed, bondtech needs to sell pre-printed parts for the new sensor.

They will. It just was announced this week so it will take them some time to get everything together and tested. Chris W. covered this in a video and said that the only thing he predicts that will need to be reprinted is the back of the extruder. Should be easy to swap out.

An add for this popped up on my FB stream.

I am sure it is a very well designed and fabricated product. But I am not seeing a huge advantage, am I missing something really obvious?

The Prusa MK2.5 and MK3 already have the business end of the bondtech extruder. I get that the SLA nylon is probably stronger, lighter and more dimensionally accurate. But does that really translate into superior prints?

Personally, I like that I can print upgrades for my extruder as the design develops. It is imaginable that being able make incremental upgrades may be a greater advantage. And if material is the primary advantage, you could print polycarbonate or nylon on your own machine. Or you can use Shapeways or some other vendor to print the latest iteration of the Prusa design in SLA.

It would be cool if someone were to do side by side testing to demonstrate the value of this product. Maybe that would address some of my skepticism.

The main advantage is it is a 3:1 geared extruder. This allows the use of a much smaller stepper motor and reduces the weight of the extruder, which in theory should help give better quality prints.

I'm not sure if the cost/benefit is worth it. There are many that say it is but I don't have the spare funds to find out for myself.

There are also some people saying it's not. It's pretty price to find out for your printer.

The current print quality doesn't bother me that much and I'm trying to use the printer as a tool, producing stuff with it and not maintaining it all the time just to get x% better print quality. But I'm pretty sure there are people doing exactly this and having fun doing it. So I like that third party companies are offering upgrades for our Prusa printers.

I will have to see how well this does with the MK3S.

We're going to have to wait a bit for Bondtech to update the extruder so it would be compatible with the new sensor.

Thanks Michael, that video is very helpful.

I definitely see the cool factor of the geared smaller stepper. These differences were not entirely apparent from the Bondtech website. And the SLA printed parts are gorgeous.

But it goes back to his conclusion on the video, "On paper, with a lighter extruder and gearing, it should be more accurate and reduce ringing. In real life I found it hard to tell the difference." I notice that Tom's guide came to a similar conclusion on an earlier iteration of the extruder.

He mostly compliments the improvement in cooling... that is exactly the same as Prusa R3 extruder design, which you can upgrade to yourself, just a matter of few printed parts. I'd like to quote him at 13:13 "But then again, that probably would have ended up beatifully on the original setup".

While it is definetly an upgrade, it is less more drastic than we would all like. I think it makes the most sense to enclosure users that print with high-temp filaments, as the extruder stepper should not overheat that easily due to lower load.

He didn't do that review any justice at all. He had ghosting before installing the new extruder, what were his belt values? What were his belt values after he installed the new extruder. He did not give that extruder a fair review

Why? Ghosting is a matter of speed settings and weight. The new extruder has less weight and claims to profit of this. If so, the ghosting would have go away but it doesn't really that much.
For me it's a perfect example what the most users will experience after the upgrade. They are not Chris Warkocki who is doing nothing else then upgrading his printers and trying different settings, creating new profiles, fiddling with the printer settings until he gets the perfect line porn to show off.
Yes, with this extruder you will get better print results but most likely only slightly better. That's exactly what Michael is saying.

Yes, but his ghosting issues were most likely not caused by his extruder to begin with. If his X belt is grossly out of spec, or if he’s using day 1 firmware or print profiles, I’d expect him to get ghosting if he tore off that extruder and replaced it with a crayon. I don’t think weight or the extruder had anything to do with it.

Re: New toy from bondtech

Looking at the parts and manual this seems to be a temporary add on solution while the extruder body is reworked to take the new sensor arrangement natively. It reminds me of the first indirect sensor mod solutions that were effectively a box added on top of the extruder before they were integrated into it.

Hopefully a fully integrated solution will be forthcoming for those of you that are interested in the Bondtech extruder.

Martin
