MK3 Volcano Mod

HI, I just wanted to share my MK3 E3D Volcano Mod. 'Mod' is really kind of a strong word, it is just one part, a slightly modified extruder cover. It lowers the print fan nozzle and print fan by 8.5mm so it maintains the correct height relative to the volcano's lower nozzle.

Otherwise, no other hardware changes are needed to perfectly accommodate the Volcano, it's probably the easiest hotend swap one could ask for.

You do need to change one line in the firmware config and compile and flash it to your printer so it knows the hotend is now 8.5mm longer than normal, but it is not too difficult. Anyway, if anyone happens to be interested in this, detailed instructions are included in the Thingy description on Thingiverse.

It is tested, I've been using it for over a week now, works a treat! Enjoy!

Seems like everybody's jumping on this train now 🙂 (i know, you have yours much longer)

Printing since friday on both printers, with the E3D Titan and the S+E mount.
Fan duct isn't directly pointed at the nozzle anymore, so i had to improvise.
Pinda is the lowest position the threads would allow, and it works splendidly.
Changed some values in the FW and in Slic3r, and this thing really flies. Not as fast as i wanted to, but well speed up.

Using a 0.4mm Nozzle, 225 degrees for PLA, and finally the infill does not break up anymore going above 120mm/s

Perhaps you can pool your speed settings to it, too, and we'll get a fast enough machine.
Or we just wait for Klipper from the github discussion, this should allow for some seriously fast moves.

I made a comment in one of the other Volcano threads about moving the E-Axis assembly up by 8.5mm on the x-carriage so that the full print volume is maintained.

I have now started work on a mod that does this. So far I have modified the x-carriage.

This is the bulk of the modification as it does the actual raising by 8.5mm. Two screw holes in the cover will need to be moved to match. On the extruder body the PINDA mount and it's cable guide will need to be moved down by 8.5mm.

Like on metacollin's mod the mounts for the print fan and its nozzle will need to be moved down by 8.5mm on the extruder cover. His cover would work for this.

With this mod there would be no need to recompile the firmware for a reduced Z axis as the current PRUSA version can be used.

I am now considering a new approach to my full print volume volcano modification.

As there is more than 8.5mm between the bottom of the X-Axis ends and the top of the Z-Motor mounting screws when Z=0, I'll redesign the Z-Mounts to raise the motors and rods by 8.4mm and add a pair of removable spacers to be fitted when using the standard V6 block. This method eliminates the main drawback of my previous approach which raises the E-Axis's centre of mass on the X-Axis.

So the new modification will consist of replacement Z-Mounts (top and bottom), a new extruder cover and a pair of spacers. All in all I think that this will be a far more elegant solution.
