Linear rods vs linear rails
For those of you who have upgraded your y-axis and possibly x-axis to linear rails, have you noticed any real benefits or drawbacks to doing so?
RE: Linear rods vs linear rails
Better bearings are reported to make an appreciable difference, but I've seen numerous folks (Toms3D, a couple r/prusa3d posts) make the step to linear rails (from bearings that already performed well, be they stock or 3rd party) and report marginal or no appreciable improvement.
Personally I run vesconite bushings for the reduced noise over roller bearings; the surface finish in conjunction with 0.9 degree steppers is fantastic.
From a purely financial perspective, there are probably better upgrades you can spend your money on before linear rails for more bang-for-buck improvements.
RE: Linear rods vs linear rails
My linear bearings were running a little rough so I swapped them out for linear rails. The linear rails are much smoother than my old bearings (new bearings would have been also), but I didn’t see any real change in print quality.

Yes, much smoother, and i'm using these one: https://www.igus.at/product/1195 expensive, but much more quiet than the Prusa bearings.
