LED for crash detection

I've seen tutorials for controlling the LED with gcode. I wonder if LED can be used for crash detection. To my understanding, this won't be possible using gcode. I assume one has to modify the firmware somehow. I would appreciate it if someone could offer me some directions.

Best Answer by JPMakesStuff:

I have been using extensively: OctoPi > Webhooks > to my home automation system > LEDs turn red or green or audio announcements.

Anytime there is a printer pause (which could be filament change, or crash, or other problem) I turn all LEDs in the house red and play "Printer needs attention NOW"  If I'm not home, I send a message via Macrodroid which pops up a notification and reads it aloud on my phone.

No firmware/printer mod needed.

Another method, if you're not already using something like HomeAssistant or HomeSeer for home automation that can receive the webhook from OctoPi, would be an Arduino with Ethernet.  Then you can go OctoPi > Webhook > Arduino > digital LED strip or relays to an LED light tower... more "directly"
