Is it possible to create an enclosure door safety interlock?

I run a maker space at a university and we just bought a prusa (still waiting for it to arrive), I plan on building an enclosure for the printer from 8020 aluminum for obvious reasons of safety in a teaching environment. I was wondering if it would be possible to add a interlock on the enclosure door that would cause the print to pause if the door is opened?

I would think a raspberry pi zero would be a fast way to do it. pause might take time to happen. maybe tie it into the power, so it would do a power recovery

I have a Prusa,therefore I research.

I have worked at a university for over 35 years, and there is no perfect way to deter foolish, curious students, along with TA's and Professors!
Maybe a lock on the cabinet would be better to keep curious folks from opening the cabinet.
Pausing a print may lead to a print failure. Avoid that at all costs.
You can always put an external stop button for emergency shutdowns.

Hope none of these "curious" students do chemistry. Just see them now in the lab with a bottle of HF acid. Look ma, no hands (literally).

Like students have access to HF acid.
But seriously what damage would a student do in the printing enclosure? they could either destroy progress of the print by knocking it or burn themselves on the hot end both of which could happen in a pause mode. In fact a paused print is more likely for tampering with the model or the hot end touching to occur.

there is no guaranteed way to stop people interfeering.

mount a camera facing outwards and broadcast a wall of shame identifying all those who mess with the printer..

Or simply lock the door to the room when the printer is going to be unattended...

nosey, Knob twiddlers are so inventive... they are hard to combat!

Uni students? Really? You must have some pretty boring universities around your neck of the woods then. 😆

Re: Is it possible to create an enclosure door safety interlock?

the more I think about it.
I don't think there is a "safe pause" that has the possibilities of messing up.

maybe...just maybe. starting a filament change MIGHT be the safest.

I used to use pause for adding stuff into the prints (magnets, ect ect) but I cant trust it now.
if I had to do it. I would trust filament change more.

so if yo could make an interlock trigger the change filament function you might be in business.

possibly tapping into the filament sensor circuit.

I have a Prusa,therefore I research.
