Idea: software "filament sensor" for escaping flexible filaments?
While looking at the new filament sensor design I though that it still would not help if the filament escapes the extruder assembly after the sensor, which happens to me sometimes even with R3 extruder parts.
2nd filament sensor after the bondtech gears would probably help, but will sure introduce maintenance difficulties and may have issues with being closer to the hot end.
But couldn't we detect this in software? As the melting/flowing plastic is the main coolant of the hotend, the amount of energy needed to keep the hotend at constant temp will be much lower when there is no plastic flowing through the nozzle. Pretty sure it can be detected quite easily within PID loop using a threshold value. While it won't allow to detect the issue pro-active and save the print, It would be sure great not having to remove all the escaped filament that is rolled onto gears and pushing the whole extruder assembly apart, and also possibly preventing the hotend clogging with burnt plastic.
For me it looks quite easy to implement, but I am very lazy coder and would probably shelf this after first compiling error.
Therefore, if the idea seems useful and/or promising to someone else from the community or Prusa team, I would be happy to see it implemented some day.
