Fine Vertical Artifacts / Trinamic Chop Tuning, Any Effect?

So as noted in me previous post, I’ve set up a testing rig using a laser pointer aiming at a wall about 20 feet away. The results have been pretty interesting.

I’m using 16 microsteps per full step for testing, and that makes the width of each microstep as measured on the wall to be about 15mm. When testing with no load on the stepper, there are notable large variations in step width.

Then I added a constant torque load to the stepper motor, which is really a better representation of what is happening. With the loaded setup the measured microstep width varies by as much as 50% across the span of a full step (16 microsteps). Here’s what that looks like on a bar chart:
