Extend Z Axis?

So iv had my printer for about a month, and i enjoy it alot. There are a few nit picks i could make, but if there was 1 thing i could change, it would be build volume. Id love to be able to print (at least) taller things, as i think the X and Y size is ok. It got me thinking, since many people build there own from scratch, is there any reason it would not be doable to just extend the frame/rods/etc to increase the size of the Z axis? Is there anything in the firmware on the board that would prevent this from working? Or is it as simple as just telling the slicing software that the build volume is now bigger?

Just curious how feasible it would be. Thanks!

Re: Extend Z Axis?

There are a number of threads on here about maximising the z height with the existing frame. Have a search on the site. And look on thingiverse

Re: Extend Z Axis?

thanks Joan. this was more a question of if there is anything "built in" that would stop me from doing it. something written into the firmware.

i did do a quick search before posting this thread, but i guess i wasnt searching for the right thing. I couldnt find any threads here about it. I searched similar wording to my title. Can you link some here if you know of any specifically. i DID see one post on thingiverse, and thats it.

either way, i guess if the thingiverse guy did it, its just a matter of extending the frame....?

My Full Build Volume Volcano Mod could be used to increase the build height by 8.5mm when used with the stock V6 heater block if you recompile the firmware as shown in the30% more build volume: 26 cm build height mod that Joan mentioned if you do not wish to purchase an additional parts apart from screws and nuts as well as some PETG to print the parts by just changing the new Z axis size to 219.

Martin

Re: Extend Z Axis?

thanks martin. for the effort, if im going to do it, im going to do it and gain some good height. i sent a price request to a local machinist to see about laser cutting a new frame from 360mm (stock) up to 500mm, just to pick an arbitrary #. so we'll see what he comes back with as far as cost to make me a new frame. at least that way then its just a simple saw and everything will line up, and there is no dealing with the extrusion/channel tube. it will probably be more pricey than im comfortable with, but its a start. but ya, if im going to do it, i gotta gain more than 8mm 🙂

Re: Extend Z Axis?

You can buy a Zaribo Mod Kit. They also have stepper to extend z from 320 mm to 420 mm.
