Copperhead Groove Mount Adapter and Z-calibration

(TLDR; go to last paragraph) For a couple years I've been using the Copperhead hotend/heatbreak/heat sink along with a higher temp thermistor. Editing the firmware very infrequently because of the hassle. It had been quite some time since I went through the editing ordeal and decided I'd remove the high temp thermistor so as to not have to edit that aspect of the firmware and thought maybe newer firmware was more forgiving with the z-height discrepancy using mounting options like https://www.printables.com/model/32793-prusa-mk32s-copperhead-groovemount-hotend-adapter .

That's not the case in my experience.

My question is: I understand why the Z calibration process fails (as the firmware expects a certain distance from the highest point to the bed) but you can still get through the first layer calibration and successfully print. Am I missing anything by not being able to complete that initial calibration?

Did you reset the Pinda depth?
