Buying E3D Volcano for the MK3

After searching around the forums ive seen a few people have the Volcano upgrade added to their Prusa MK3, but haven't quite found the info im looking for.

The Starter Kit/Eruption Pack found here: https://e3d-online.com/volcano-kits
they come with a Thermistor, and Heater Cartridge. Are these better than the ones that come stock with the MK3 ?
Are they needed at all? or can I just use the ones Prusa supplied?

Do I even need one of the Volcano kits? or can i just grab a Volcano aluminium block and nozzle separately and have it perform the same?

I'm looking to have the best success printing with 1.0mm nozzle, or even 1.2mm

The Volcano hotends are using the same heatbreak, thermistor and heatercartridge as the V6 (Prusa stock) ones.

So you could just use what your printer came with...

If i would consider to purchase a Volcano i would go for the eruption kit. Just to have some spares if anything goes wrong during the swap.

Thanks for your reply, i am certainly considering buying the Eruption pack. As i have more than 1 Prusa MK3 im also considering buying just the 'bare bones' to go with my other printers.

you mentioned the Volcano hotends use the same heatbreak, thermistor and heatercartridge.
does this mean all i would need is the aluminium block and a nozzle?

wise to get a spare thermistor and heater too. err on the safe side!

they are often difficult to extract from the heat block

Absolutely , i will definitely get some spares. But at the moment im just trying to wrap my head around the volcano hot end.

Is it just the longer melting chamber provided by the aluminium block and a nozzle that helps it perform with a 1mm nozzle?
is it as simple as that?

or is there another part im supposed to buy to make it work?

Hi Craig,

It's pretty much just the longer melt zone, that transfers heat more effectively to a larger volume of plastic.

RE: Buying E3D Volcano for the MK3

Are the heater cartridges and thermistors that come with Volcano hotend kits compatible with Prusa MK3s printers or is it best to use the stock ones that are shipped with those?

I'm able to get nearly the same throughput out of my Mk3 with E3D V6 hotend with a 3D Solex nozzle mounted as with my other printer with a Volcano clone. No other mods required. The extruder becomes the bottleneck.
