ASA Adhesion Issue on New G10 Plate

The heat bed plate that came with my used MK3S+ printer was trashed. Scratches and deformations EVERYWHERE. After doing some research I purchased a G10 plate from the Etsy seller everyone seemed to recommend. I am trying to print a couple of parts in ASA for a coffee roaster mod and as soon as I ran the first calibration of the new plate the filament slid off like I was printing with butter and nothing I did could get it to adhere.

I messaged the seller and he said he only has experience printing with PLA and PETG on G10. I need this part printed so I put the old sheet back on and it's printing beautifully with no modifications or glue sticks or anything like that. Is ASA incompatible with G10? I would really have hated to spent $65 on a new sheet that only works with a couple filament options.

RE:

I gather that G10 means garolite or FR4 fiberglass ?. This is mainly used for printing nylon because, with these filaments, G10/Garolite works better than PEI surfaces.  For other filaments (PLA, PETG, ABS, PC..) no advantage over regular PEI plates and sometimes it’s worse.

Regarding your issue :  if ASA doesn’t sticks at all to the surface, it’s very difficult to calibrate well the Z offset of the first layer.

First thing to do :  try  PLA and/or PETG with this G10 plate. If you get good adhesion with them, then it’s a matter of ASA/G10 compatibility. Using adhesive on the plate should help.  If PLA and/or PETG have the same problems than ASA, then either the plate is a dog or you haven’t dialed correctly the Z offset of the first layer.

Thanks for your reply. As soon as the new plate arrived I attempted to calibrate the Z offset and literally watched as the ASA "touched down" on the bed then just lifted off and got dragged along by the extruder. As soon as I swapped the plate back to the regular PEI one it printed perfectly. I'm assuming it's a compatibility issue between ASA and G10 (garolite).

I will attempt a PLA or PETG print on it to see if its defective or not.

  • it's used for nylon. nylon is very sticky and hot. I would not judge its performance on petg or other.

Ah dang, bummer. I only went with the G10 plate after doing a bunch of research thinking it was the right upgrade for what I needed it for. Thanks for the reply. I guess my research led to an incorrect understanding.
