Adding a small exhaust fan to my enclosure? - Can i use the mk3's PSU or do i have to use an external power supply?

Hi there,

I know little to nothing about electronics but I'm making a modified lack enclosure with my mk3 which will hopefully be 100% soundproof and i'm wanting to add a small fan to the enclosure to heat the temperature inside it down.

Would you be able to help in letting me know if there's any way to hook a fan (like this one used for a PCU: https://www.mwave.com.au/product/noctua-nff12-pwm-120mm-fan-aa16117 ) up to the mk3's PSU? If so, what type of connector does the fan need to have or if not, what is typically the best way to power it?

Thank you!

the MK3 runs on 24 volts so you will have to get a fan that takes that voltage or get a step down converter. They are on ebay here is a link to what I am talking about:

or just get a 24 volt fan

Mark

Thanks for the help, Does the RAMBo board have any spare space on it to plug in a fan? If so do you know what type of connector the fan would need to have?

I added two small, inexpensive 12 volt fans wired in series to cool my PSU, I added spade lugs to their leads and slipped them in two of the terminal screws in the Einsey terminal block.

Thanks for the reply robert! Apologies if this is a stupid question - when you say you slipped them into two of the terminal screws, the psu cables occupy 4 of the screws and the heat bed 2. Do you 'stack' the spade lugs coming from the cooling fans on top of the psu cables?

So you would have the Einsy board > PSU Cable > Fan (Positive PSU Slot?)> Metal Washer > Screw holding it tight. Is that right?

Yes, I stacked the fan leads on top of a pair of PSU leads in the Einsey terminal block. My fans draw .04 amp so the load is negligible on the 10 amp supply.
