I'm not sure if it me or what but it seams a bit clunky.

You it's not just you. I use KISS but that (at the moment) is very difficult to learn. Slic3r with the provided profiles is really your best option until you learn more about the printer.

is simplify3d worth the money?

In my opinion, absolutely not, but others will tell you different, and there are enough S3D users here to assist with queries.

This is a matter of preference, and people have strong opinions. These are just mine.

The more powerful the slicer (the more control it gives you) the more difficult it is to learn, but it is worth it, as many models have differences that it needs, depending on your intent. Pick a good one and stick with it. A simple one would be outgrown quickly the moment you want to do something special.

My experience is that Slic3r has great starting points built by Prusa, so you can start with less knowledge and gain success. Then as you need a new feature, you can find it and learn it. After a while you know all the Slic3r features and it feels less clunky (or you are now clunky with it.) I am now doing some very strange things with it (to adjust the center of gravity of prints) and feel I have control of most things in it, EXCEPT supports which are painful (I can get them to work okay, but do not feel I have optimized the results yet.)

Because Prusa uses Slic3r and supports it, it get's fixes and updates for the machine faster than most (but a number of the other ones keep up well too.)

I've used slic3r for almost 1 year and am looking at mattercontrol as an alternative. I'd like to think I'm great at searching out info, but still cannot find general prusa preferred settings, let alone multi material settings that would allow me to evaluate each program equally. Those with more knowledge and experience (peter 😎 ) would make quick work of this I'm sure.

Long story short, I've had great success with matter hackers filament before my multi material upgrade, and can't find another free slicer software quite like mattercontrol.... grain of salt= just started poking around mattercontrol today.

With the MM upgrade you are currently limited to 3 choices:

1. Slic3r with tower
2. KISS with third party post-processor
3. Write your own post-processor (or request a change in the KISS PP to work with your slicer of choice).
