USB protocol description?

Is there a description of the USB protocol available? Or is it limited to GCode?

What I would like to do is connect my Raspberry PI that has a camera watching the printer to the printer itself to pull info such as the current file name, print progress and settings. I could combine that info with the video stream to mke a "virtual" LCD display. Is this a possibiltity?

If you want to print from SD card, don't connect anything to USB port. Access to USB port may cause the printer to reset which destroys ongoing print process.
Use OctoPi as printing controller. It has camera support built-in.

Well, so far I like printing from the SD card and what I wanted to be able to do is get status information over USB. I can see how that might confuse things though.

I'll look at Octopi though as that way be the way to go.

OctoPi/Print is the way many of us have gone; it is quick and simple to set up and allows access to the printer via a web browser from wherever you happen to be, including a live video stream and almost full control over the printer.

I got Octoprint up on the Pi and it's wonderful! I even signed up for Patreon for the project.
