Slic3r bug?
I didn't catch this before attempting to print...
For my model Slic3r generates a solid layer on "thin air" in the middle of infill:
Shouldn't it detect that the plastic is unsupported there and add support or even solid layers all the way down?
Any work-arounds?

Re: Slic3r bug?
Unfortunately this is how all the slicers I am aware of work. It is up to you to configure a proper infill density to support such islands. Slic3r will actually inflate the islands by 3mm to increase the chance of achoring them to the infill lines, but if the support is too sparse, this does not help much.
I plan to do what you proposed: To anchor the layer to the infill lines. But my TODO list is quite long already.
Re: Slic3r bug?
I switched to grid infill IIRC and with that it was able to anchor to the infill lines.
Automatically detecting this case would be great... if I ever get some free time I'll try having a look at the source code.
