[noob-help] Exporting .stl from sketchup removes geometry.

Hello dear friends. This is my first post here so forgive me for asking such a noob question.

I have a pretty simple geometry, made in sketchup, with a hole in it. I export this to .stl, then run it through netfabbs stl-fixer. This workflow as worked fine for some 10+ prints now (totally noob!). However when slic3r opens this latest file, it seems that at some point the hole gets "filled in". Can someone explain who / how this happens and what I can do to remedy it (other than with powertools! :D)

I would have liked to to attach the original skp and stl files here but the attachement dialog warns me that these are "invalid extensions" =/
I put the files in a dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/senlrctsqfz194h/AAA6-g5dYL1BEWCafC_SeosVa?dl=0

Any help would be super appreciated 😀

Hi Olle,

I use 123D design, which exports directly to an STL file,
and then I use Slic3r Prusa Edition, to slice the STL file into G code and use the G code with the Printer

I never use meshmixer...

Meshmixer tries to repair errors in a file, but it doesn't know exactly how the file is supposed to look in the first place. so it may be seeing the hole as an error, and 'fixing' it for you....

ideally your design should not cause errors in the STL files,

what you need to do is confirm whether there are errors in the first place, if not, don't use meshmixer, If there are always errors, considder using a different 3d Design tool..

regards Joan

I've found that Sketchup is not a great tool for making 3D printing designs. The problem is that Sketchup designs surfaces, not solids, and so it's easy to mess up and have something that looks right in Sketchup but which isn't actually solid when printed.

I suggest trying Fusion360. It's free for hobbyists, and incredibly powerful.

Hi guys! Thanks for the replies. It got me thinking. I'm now using fusion 360 which is not only a superior modelling tool to sketchup but also display none of the aforementioned problems =)
