Extruder Steps/mm Way Off

Just was wondering if anyone else had seen similar issues with E steps being way off...

My Prusa i3 MK2 has around 5.5 Km of filament put through it with ~60 days of print time. I recently noticed that my top layers were severely under-extruded.

So I decided to calibrate the e/steps. After a few calibration runs and getting a consistent 100mm extruded, I settled on 267.93 steps/mm. This seems way, way off the stock 161 steps/mm for the extruder. Could this be caused by wear on the hobbed gear? Has anyone else seen this type of behavior?

EDIT: Just to clarify, I did check the grub screw on the hobbed gear and made sure it was not slipping. Also recently cleaned up the hot end, and replaced the nozzle to make sure I didn't have a partial jam.

might it be that you've once set an extrusion multiplier != 1 ?

For your reference i ended up with 168.05. It was set at 161.3 from Prusa.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, I was thinking what I came out with was way too high. Sure enough, the test print over extruded a bit. I don't believe that I have an extrusion multiplier set, I've not set one my self on the printer and my slicers is still set to a multiplier of 1. Is there a code to check if a multiplier is set in the firmware?

The new firmware hard codes the value to 161.3. It will revert back to that between power cycles, so you either have to put the gcode to change it in the header of each print job or change extrusion mutiplier by the same proportion instead (I think that will accomplish the same thing, still figuring this out myself).

I came out with about 168 also when doing my calibration.

Is your Mk2 old enough to have the brass hobbed gear? It could be getting worn down. Ordering one of the new steel ones wouldn't hurt.
