Z axis drop midway though print

Hi! I recently ordered a i3 mk2s kit and built it. After some slight problems with Z calibration, we got it tuned in to the correct distance and began our first full print - the Prusa Logo. The print was really promising up until 82% where something failed and the hot-end dropped hard into the print, at which point we powered the machine off.

Attached is a picture of the error that resulted in the print.

Everything appears fine in the info screen and elsewhere, and the calibration is still correct.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

Re: Z axis drop midway though print

check your extruder assembly.
you should not be able to push- or pull the hotend up or downwards inside the extruder body... not even with force.

a few weeks ago, we had a user here who managed to assemble the complete E3D V6 hotend far to deep inside the extruder cover (didn't fixed the rim of the hotend inside the seating of the cover), so the whole extruder was located a few mm to deep.... which led to problems with the height of the p.i.n.d.a. probe as well.

Sorry, the wording of the original post was probably misleading - the Hot end itself didn't drop --> the Z axis jumped down mid layer and rammed the hot end into the print.

Just in case, I checked - the whole extruder assembly is solid as it should be.

I have the live Z adjust set to -0.750, and it was not reset by the axis drop.

Re: Z axis drop midway though print

the z-axis is moved by the trapezoid spindles.... so it won't drop accidentially midway through print and there is no clearance at the nylon trapezoid nuts that may cause such a behaviour.

the only thing I can imagine is that the whole z-frame dropped because the M10 threaded rods didn't sit completely inside the notches of the frame and the M10 nuts & washers were not tightened enough.

I considered that, but if that were the issue, the calibration would need to be redone, no? It is still correct. Seemed like a software error to me, not hardware. Anyway, will try another print and see if it repeats. Thanks for the help!

not nescessarily. as long as the printer manages to fulfill the 9-point calibration sequence you won't notice it.
it seems to be very unlikely that a sudden "drop down" of the z-axis midway print should be caused by a software error !
or does it happen again, at exactly the same spot when you print the prusa logo another time ?
