Y axis belt installation. - Is bending of the motor mount expected?

Hello, I noticed that tensioning the Y axis belt causes the motor mount to bend slightly. This makes the motor pulley tilt relative to the belt holder and idler pulley so the belt always rubs against the side of the motor pulley. Is this normal? I don't see any way to avoid the issue when tensioning the belt.

Hi John

Yes, that does happen; just ensure that the belt is not overtight (which is rather difficult to define...).

Thanks. The belt pings like a music string, but it doesn't seem too tight. I was thinking of designing a new motor mount that allows the wired end of the motor to rest against the threaded rods. I think this would prevent the problem. However, if the titling motor doesn't pose any problems then I won't bother.

My motor has been twisted slightly since I bought the printer. However, I think there has recently been a downloadable part designed to fit on the wired end of the motor. You are probably better off if can get hold of that and print it,

Thanks again Peter.

I found this one on thingiverse. Is this the part you were referring to? http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:107062

No, but that one should work fine.

I've printed that one, and am using it. I printed the one that is easy to insert after the printer is built. It is basically a straight bar with a bend on the top that rides over the top threaded bar. It looks like it will help with any rearward motion of the Y-axis motor.

When my printer actually goes quiet for 5 minutes I will measure the "play" the belts have. At least it can then be used to compare when building. For instance lawnmower or other small engines say there should be so much play in a belt. Same thing can be said for the printer. Something like 10mm (not exact only an example) play if pushed down. Some I saw on facebook were super tight it must put some pressure on the motor spindles. 😮
