Wispy stringing on prints

I've had my Prusa i3mk2 for while and I'm ready to start fine-tuning it for optimal print quality, starting with this ghostly, wispy filament issue. I'm using the firmware version that came on my Prusa, 3.0.9, and my XYZ calibration is spot on (not that that matters in this context, anyway). This happened out of the box with the demos provided on the SD cards and continues with objects I prepare using the Prusa Slic3r. I haven't really messed with the profile settings in Slic3r except to adjust temps per filament and try to turn Wipe on and off. So retraction settings are at 0.8 and this happens with all filament I've used so far (mainly Hatchbox PLA). Also, I know the optimal temps for several of my filament spools and don't have this issue on my other printer (an MPSM) but I did test some in a 15-20 degree range around the optimal temps and the issue doesn't go away.

Any tips or advice is appreciated and if there's any consolidated info for fine-tuning this printer, please provide a link.

3 things come to mind:

- print temperature, colder is better (since each printer is different, its got to be tuned per printer)
- retraction settings: retraction speed and distance (since this looks like a very small piece also check minimum travel for retraction)
- travel speed (faster is better)

PS: Hitting it with a heatgun for a second will get rid of the whisps

I don't think it's the temp as I've run some of them pretty cool and, at least in one case, cool enough to clearly under-extrude. I can take a closer look at retraction settings but wondering if anyone has any suggestions beyond the defaults, esp. since this was occurring with the demo prints so I don't think it was a setting I got wrong when slicing.

Travel speed is something else I haven't really dived into. So far I've kept to the defaults and tried to find the optimal temp for that speed.

I burn these off with a lighter, more convenient than plugging in my heat gun, but I guess more hassle with larger prints (This example one is just 20mm in diameter). Thanks for that tip, I might not have thought about the heat gun as a remedy for this.

I think I will print out some stringing tests, that should let me know for sure if temp is the issue.

I think I can safely rule out temperature as being a factor.

I would suggest following these steps:

1) Check filament diameter, use the correct value in your Filament settings.
2) Calibrate the Extruder. ( 100mm test )
3) Try ~1,65 for the retraction value.

May be you will have better results with this settings, just give it a try.

reducing the speed of the print fan might help as well.
