Why am I getting gaps between layers
Hi guys,
I'm a newbie at 3d-printing. I assembled my MK2S recently and I did a few prints.
I noticed that I'm getting the same problem in a few prints:
There's a gap between layers, i.e. empty space. This is a problem because it's a weak point where the print might fail, and of course it's also ugly.
Why is this happening and how can I stop it?

❓ do these problems also appear when you print some gcode provided by prusa (that came with the kit) ?
💡 if not, check your model. it might be that you model has some defects and the slicer can't cope with it.
➡ if it happens with all models (as well with the samples from prusa) there may be some hardware related problems.
first have a look at the spool, it's holder and how easy the filament runs off from the spool.
if the spool holder "blocks" somehow (maybe due to some tangled filament), the extruder motor might pull the whole x-carriage upwards.
then check the trapezoid nuts: do they run smooth at the trapezoid spindles ?
to check this disconnect the power of the printer and turn the axis of the z-motors by hand. do you feel any severe resistance ? maybe starting from a certain height ?
check the little protector caps at the bottom of the spindle as well. sometimes they tend to be "sucked" inside the motor and may cause some blockage.
are your z-axis spindles dead straight, even when you move the whole carriage up to their end ? they should be !
there should be no force in x-direction applied to the spindles.
then check the whole cable harness at the rear of the extruder. does it move free, without interfering with the cable harness from the printbed ?

I had the same problem as you. I solved it by just tighten the pulley screws on the extruder motor
