I started experimenting with the maximum print speed. I was wondering what your maximum achievable speed is (without affecting the print obviously)?
I found that my printer starts to skip steps on the X-axis when doing quick and/or far movements with more than 170% of speed. It varies slightly based on the print job/the exact movement. I was wondering if this might be because of wrong belt tension or just to be expected at such a speed?

To print faster requires a fine coordination between variables. Generally speaking, if you want to print faster, you also have to make sure you can pump filament through the hot-end faster. That often requires a higher temperature. You may also need to change extrusion parameters too.

The default Slic3r and S3D configurations are 40mm/sec. It looks like 170% would be 68 mm/sec. I would expect to see negative impact on the print if you are just increasing speed without changing other variables. Set aside a long weekend. Grab a piece of paper (or a spreadsheet) create a simple 20x20x20mm cube in the Slic3r of your choice, and start experimenting!

A 20mm cube will not give correct figures due to acceleration factor.

You need a good-sized object (150x150x10), print hollow, with 2 or 3 perimeters.

Interesting. It makes sense that larger would help get a more true answer. Thanks.
