Weird extrusion issue

Hi all,
I came home today to this: http://imgur.com/a/zaDUu

First image is the top, second is flipped over. First few layers came out fine, then the top few layers printed out like garbage. So I tried manually extruding filament and found that it is skipping, which leads me to the following video:

What is going on here? Is this a clog? It's just so weird and I had just took the nozzle off a few days ago for another clog issue (which was my fault). All these clogging issues from this new Boots Industries filament I got, I may just throw it all away.
EDIT: Btw I took the retainer screws off and was able to push a piece of filament to the nozzle while cold just fine.

Re: Weird extrusion issue

Could very well be a partial nozzle clog. Or maybe the filament diameter is inconsistent (too thick) or your extruder tension screws are too tight. Or, if you're still using the crappy original spool holder that came with the printer: too much friction trying to roll the spool.

I'd unroll a few cm of your filament, use some calipers and check it's diameter, then try again with filament losely hanging there (so the spool holder can't affect things). If it still does it, try cold pulls. Cold pulls do wonders with clogs and as a preventive maintenance.

And yes, some filaments are simply not worth the hassle. Don't know about Boots, never heard of it.

Re: Weird extrusion issue

I've had this same thing happen changing out filaments.

My fix when it happens is to simply apply a little finger force to the filament to feed it into the extruder.

It seems to happen when I insert a filament that has been removed previously (and has significant pawl marks on it already). I have been following the preheat for 'previous material' guidelines.

I'll try to cut that 'pre pawled' stuff off of my next filament change and see if it makes a difference.

Not sure if my solution works - but I have experienced exactly what you are seeing.

I'm not sure what pawl marks are. I'm going to try and see if I can clear the clog today. That's what I'm betting it is.

You may have the tension screws set too tight. This causes the damage to the filament which prevents it feeding properly. The tension should be set as low as possible without causing skipping.

Re: Weird extrusion issue

Three things come mind...

1- Tension screws on bearing to filament, loose = slippage do the extrusion calibration per steps / mm.

2- Check for clog.

3- Check the extruder wheel for allen grub screw not loose.

Re: Weird extrusion issue

Thanks everyone, I figured it out. It was a partial clog. I took the nozzle off and cleaned it all out. Seems like lint got in there, possibly from cleaning the outside of the nozzle with a paper towel. I'm going to use a microfiber towel from now on.
