V2 Calibration fail & print not sticking

I am having issues with getting the v2 calibration to complete successfully. The xyz calibration completed without an issue. Can someone please help me out?

Have you done the live Z-calibration?
It looks like your nozzle is way high

Yes; i adjusted the live z all the way down to -0.700 but no major change in print. not sure what the issue is.

Re: V2 Calibration fail & print not sticking

💡 have a look at this thread.
i've set it up because getting the z-live adjustment value right with only the v2calibration gcode is nearly impossible. 🙄

➡ look out for version #4 of the test surface, but read the first few sites of the thread thoroughly to understand how it's going to be used and how the prints should be interpreted.

btw.: this thread helped a lot of newcomers getting their print sticking to the pei sheet... unfortunately it drops "out of sight" after a few days (when nobody posts anything there).
i already asked the admins to make it a "sticky thread", but it seems that they are to busy to decide.

So I tried the suggested calibration surface gcode and the picture shows what happened. It appears the filament does not stick to the bed and the nozzle is pretty close to the bed.

Any suggestions?

Your bed looks really dirty, wipe it clean with IPA or even aceton if you are printing PLA.
There is no need for any glue or similar for PLA, it should stick good to the PEI if your live Z is good.

Using JeffJordan's code have helped me a lot.

Hey Gert,

Thanks for the response.

I put the glue down in hopes that the print would stick better. I'll wipe it down and I'll try again.

Your definition of "Pretty Close" please...

Unfortunately, the priter doesn't understand approximations like that and requires the nozzle to be set to around 0.2mm from the bed.

Just guessing here bit I think "Pretty close" is a lot more than the required 0.2mm... 😉

Oh, and make sure the bed is spotless...

just for your convenience ➡ 0.2mm is the thickness of two sheets of standard A4 or B4 copy paper...

Issue persists. I've noticed when pre heating the nozzle the filament comes out in a spiral/coil instead of straight down to the heat bed.

The image below shows the failed v2 calibration. The print started out correctly and then when it made the first turn at the upper righthand corner, the extruded filament didn't stay flat on the bed. Instead, the printed filament drags along the rest of the print.

The V2 Calibration code is a difficult way to set your Live Z value, which is what you are lacking. Try this method:

http://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/prusa-i3-kit-building-calibrating-first-print-main-f6/-before-you-ask-troubleshooting-video-updated--t472.html#p39190

This is what Jeff was trying to get you to try, instead of V2 Calibration ...

Re: V2 Calibration fail & print not sticking

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but this is the exact same issue I started having this weekend. The printer was working fine for the past 4-6 weeks. I've gone through the recommended steps in "Before you ask..." http://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/prusa-i3-kit-building-calibrating-first-print-main-f6/-before-you-ask-troubleshooting-video-updated--t472.html#p39190 , tried the calibration square instead of the V2, but even the Prusa Logo is failing. There have been no changes in the environment where the printer is located.

I am using Hatchbox PLA 1.75 Silver https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MEZEEJ2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . It is the second role of this brand that I have used. The first role worked fine on everything that I printed. BTW, I have gone through the original role that I received with the printer, one role Hatchbox silver, some Hatchbox Black, White, and Glow.

Here is an attempt to print the Prusa logo after running through all the troubleshooting steps.

You can see that it printed the first and second layer, but on the third it was lifting and got caught on the extruder nozzle. It also has been dragging the perimeter line out of place.

After spending the entire day reading through the forums, I am taking Josef's advice and posting. 🙂

Re: V2 Calibration fail & print not sticking

A few things to check:

1) Is your bed really clean? What do you use to clean it? As pure an IPA as possible works great, but if it gets oily, I find the combination (in order) of Windex (blue glass cleaner), Acetone (as pure as you can find), and IPA (as pure as you can find) cleans it nicely. Sometimes the additives in acetone or IPA (which may be great for nails or skin) prevent adhesion.

2) This object is oriented along the Y axis. Is it possible the extruder cable is "hanging a bit low" and dragging on the bed, breaking the object loose?

3) Within the slicer, using ZHop (or Z Lift) of 0.5mm can help in case it is the nozzle hitting the part.

4) Can you post a picture of your "correctly set" first layer from the "Calibration_surface_PLA_75x75@200um_v4.gcode"? We might be able to see an issue with it that you are not.

I've been using 70% IPA to clean. I did use some Windex this weekend as part of the troubleshooting process.

2) This object is oriented along the Y axis. Is it possible the extruder cable is "hanging a bit low" and dragging on the bed, breaking the object loose?

The object is/was actually oriented on the X-axis. Since the print lifted, the extruder moved it. The extruder cable is above the nozzle height.

3) Within the slicer, using ZHop (or Z Lift) of 0.5mm can help in case it is the nozzle hitting the part.

I'll give this a try, but want to point out that I was printing the Prusa logo from the SD card.

4) Can you post a picture of your "correctly set" first layer from the "Calibration_surface_PLA_75x75@200um_v4.gcode"? We might be able to see an issue with it that you are not.

I'll get that later today and post.

Dave

I've also had issues with PLA (DevilDesign and Filament-PM). Smaller shapes and corners keep lifting from the bed even though I've cleaned it with IPA and "roughed" up the surface with scotch pad.

In the end I just put down some blue masking tape and gluestick. And so far that have worked every time.

Here are some photos that I just took.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/HxOYa1Uf9GFLxnp62

Showing the "spider silk" that gets dragged. Height of nozzle and PINDA. Print at .450 and .525. Added print at .525 and .500. Notice that the .525 side got caught.

Re: V2 Calibration fail & print not sticking

This may be resolved. Lesson, never trust your eyes that everything is level. I grabbed a torpedo level and place it on the bed and found that the right side was slightly higher. I pressed down on the printer, but it did not change. The printer sits on top of a Craftsman utility stand, with a 1" piece of plywood as the top. I placed the level on the stand and discovered that is was the culprit. Pushed the stand till it was level and now I am running the 9 square 2mm test pattern.

Re: V2 Calibration fail & print not sticking

Glad you found an issue. I would look carefully at your calibration squares. The fact that you can see through them, and they are individual lines not on smashed surface tells me you do not have a good Live Z setting yet. See Jeff's thread and look carefully at the photos. Your images tell me you need to set the Live Z lower yet - (a larger negative number).

Re: V2 Calibration fail & print not sticking

Glad you found an issue.

I was glad too, but it has not resolved my printing problem. I have spent a second day attempting to get the nice flat .2mm sheets that are the "gold standard" for Z-axis calibration and I cannot. I have gone from 0mm to -1mm. the closest I can get is at -.485 with a .22 sheet that has lines that separate when you remove it from the bed. Extremely frustrating when everything had been running smoothly for over a month.

I did a full reset on the printer last night and started the tests again this morning. I moved the extruder to home and used one of the supplied wire ties (1.1mm) under the PINDA. I full calibrated XYZ, Z, Home, and used the paper test. That is when I was able to get to .22 in thickness (-.485). When I went to -.500, the the thickness increased to .3mm.

I also went out and bought some 91% IPA and acetone to clean the bed.

Re: V2 Calibration fail & print not sticking

maybe it's just the probe that is messed up. try moving it a bit lower. if that fails get it replaced.
