Sainsmart LCD Controller

I was wondering if anyone had tried using a Sainsmart LCD controller with their printer?
I bought one as my original RepRapDiscount controller, which works perfectly, does not fit in the printed housing due to the contrast pot being too big.
I bought the Sainsmart controller as I could tell from pictures it had a small surface mounted contrast pot. The issue I now have is it doesnt want to play nicely with the Prusa. I dont have much experience but I was wondering whether the firmware would need altering to suit the controller?
If anyone could help, either by recommending another controller that fits and will work or let me know if my firmware theory is rubbish?
