Printer reboots on selftest and preheat

I just finished my Prusa i3 Mk2S printer. Firmware is 3.10. Before I started the printer up for the first time I verified it was set to 110V as required for operation in the USA. Everything seems fine, but every time either the extruder or the heated bed is starting to heat up the printer immediately resets.

As the selftest failed in the same place (hot-end test) I tried calibrating and it rebooted halfway during the calibration process. I then dug through the forum and saw references for defective heated beds, so i unplugged the heated bed and started preheat again. Same result.

I then pulled the extruder heater plug (with the heated bed plug still unplugged, and the preheat started up normally. Of course it did not actually preheat anything, but the printer did not reset. However, if one of them is plugged in the printer will reset. I unplugged the PSU and verified that the voltage is set to 110 which it is. With the PSU unplugged I then toggled the switch to 220 and back to 110, then plugged in again. Same result, the printer resets upon preheat or selftest when either the extruder or the heated bed power connectors are plugged into the RAMBo.

Finally I tried swapping the two PSU connectors to the RAMBo as the manual says that the order does not matter, just in case. Same result, printer resets when either extruder or heated bed are plugged in.

My conclusion at this point is that the PSU is defective. If anyone has another suggestion, I'd love to hear it.

Are you sure that you have the bed and extruder plugged into the correct sockets and not swapped?

I triple checked the connections. Heat bed is left (black wires), extruder is right (red wires) at the bottom right (horizontal) of the RAMBo. Only when both connectors are disconnected, the printer doesn't reboot upon selftest or preheat.

Re: Printer reboots on selftest and preheat [RESOLVED]

So I found the problem.

I did some more troubleshooting, measured 12V voltage and such, but the data came out fine. Finally I had a look at the PSU again. The 110/220V switch was apparently not pushed down far enough, I pushed it down until i felt resistance, which was a considerable way, but tonight I tried pushing it up and then down a little harder and with an audible click it went farther down than before. After that the selftest passed and the printer calibrated and preheated fine.

Calibration went great, by the way. The only thing I ran into was that initially the probe could not reach the front calibration points. I loosened the screws on the y axis rods and moved the vertical frame about a millimeter forward. After that calibration passed perfectly. Printing the bed level pattern worked fine, too.

I am printing a gimbal lock for my DJI Phantom drone right now, and it looks great.

Thanks for reading, and lesson learned for me.

C.
