Just gouged a big groove in my heat bed

I had my printer up and running nicely printing away happily. Then I had to move it. I have just put it back and thought I ought to calibrate it just to make sure all was well. I had a couple of minor issues with it not seeing calibration points but after a bit of faffing about all was well. Except for the Z calibration. First try and the probe hit the bed. So I played with the pinda probe. It calibrated fine but when trying out a print the nozzle was way high.
After faffing about with the pinda probe for ages I got it so the material was at least near the bed so I started using the live Z adjust. I had it all the way down at -8mm!! Surely this isn't actually mm? Away 1st layer measured 0.14mm so close enough.
So I go for another go at a print just the batarang nothing clever. On the heads return from calibration about 20mm from the edge of the board the nozzle dives into the heat bed and carves a groove 70 or 80mm long as I wasn't expecting it so it took me a second the press the stop button.
I am guessing that this is something to do with having so much negative Z adjustment but why would it take a dive when just traveling back to start the print?

Thanks for any input.

Duncan

Re: Just gouged a big groove in my heat bed

Interestingly I have just re calibrated my Z axis and it seams fine.
I then did a mesh bed levelling and that too is fine until it finishes and heads back to the home position. As it sets off the extruder lowers by a couple of mm which pushes the corner of the bed down.
Is there some way I can reset my Z adjust without starting a print as I don't want to drag the nozzle the entire width of the bed?

Thanks

Duncan

You can find the option in either the Settings or Calibration menu (can't check right now and I even think it got moved at some point). But you don't have to actively print to adjust it.

If your live-z adjust has to be bigger than 500 (which is in microns, i.e. half a millimeter), you should move the PINDA probe further down (just turn it a bit if you're not too far above 500).

From my experience using a zip tie is indeed the best practice to do so. Just move the extruder by hand or carefully steer using "move axis" and live Z adjust for the last few steps so the tip of the nozzle touches the bed.

Put the zip tie under the probe and make sure the probe pushes against the zip tie.

1 full turn of the PINDA is 1mm according to Prusa. I recommend making minor steps by no more than a 1/4 turn at a time.
