OMG Why add the freezer step allen.n ? Turpentine works in situ , with the bed still attached to the printer at room temperature. My point entirely, KISS.

I just swapped the PEI sheet today and the Turpentine worked perfectly. I picked it up for under $7 at Menards below in the link. This video on youtube is exactly what I did, except that I let it soak/scrape off the adhesive 3 times instead of 2 just to make sure I got it all and then I went over it with isopropyl alcohol. I probably used around 10 ounces of turpentine between the 3 soakings.

Wow... looks like I need several other tools before attempting to change surface. I might be missing this... when you put into the freezer, how are you going to protect the terminal and screws? I'm afraid they might go rusty due to condensation

I'm not sure where you saw a freezer in the video. I placed two paper towels soaked with turpentine and let it sit in a garbage bag in the garage. An hour I came back and opened up the garbage bag and tossed the paper towels into the trash. Then I used one of my tint tools ( http://44tools.com/4-lidco-gray-bondo/ ) and removed the glue residue that came off easy. Then I did the whole soaking paper towels again for another hour and repeated the process a total of 3 times. Then a final cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and it was good to go.

The heatbed in the garbage bag is to help prevent the paper towels from drying out from the turpentine or whatever solvent you use since it evaporates.

I'm a Biochemist and you are correct. I would recommend removing the bed from the printer as it makes applying the new PEI sheet easier and you're less likely to get dirt or debris in it when you're applying the new PEI sheet. It also allows you to wrap the printer bed in a garbage bag while the turpentine goes to work on the adhesive.

You forget KISS. Keeping the bed in situ avoids a lot of recalibration of the Prusa I3. Turpentine vapour will have little affect, real inundation and a scraper does. The printer bed can be dealt with easily in this way. The PEI sheet will not respond to Turpentine vapour it is a high grip resistant material to many we print with. The PEI sheet needs gradual lifting and application of Turpentine underneath. The best place for it is in situ to do this. Turpentine vapour will not get under the PEI sheet in a bag! Useless and an extra step not needed, in this case. once PEI sheet is lifted the remaining adhesive is easily removed with wiping, with a cloth inundated with Turps. Bed will be totally clean and ready for new PEI sheet. No recalibration needed.

KISS = Keep It Simple, Stupid. And I never imagined that Nigel would be advocating the best slicer available 😉 .

In situ = In Situation = in it's current location.

Removing and freezing the bed is a simple way to make the glue go brittle whereby it is easy to then remove the PEI sheet without doing any damage.

It really isn't a problem to remove the bed and place in the freezer for a while; it saves so much time and possible bed damage.

Thank you Peter, PJR, for your translation of my comment and your joke about the KISS slicer you advocate. Freezing does make many things brittle, a lot of damage can be done. Just saying 🙂

You make your choice, and thereby live by it, In replacing the PEI sheet on your Prusa I3 Bed.

Nigel, no, I haven't used a "feezer", just a freezer 😉 . Works very well to get chewing gum off clothes as well.

It really is such a shame that you can't get your head around KISS. The latest features are simply awesome.

I do with acetone succesfully :
- remove bed
- put in freezer 45 minutes
- remove PEI as descibed
- glue removal : put acetone directly on bed above bathroom sink (or other) and quickly and carefully remove glue with painter's knife in only 1 movement direction from up to down like this ( )
>>> the glue is directly molten with acetone - repeat approx 10-15 give excellent result but very toxic to small acetone and must have glove.

!!! put acetone and paper towel or sopalin do nothing : must be direct acetone on glue after removed PEI. If Acetone on ambient bed temperature : doesn't work at all. Bed must be put in Freezer before this operation

I do that because was a pain to find limone or the other describe here.

I consider this as an emergency and last method if no choice because lot of acetone to use (approx 1/2 liter) and this toxicity ! do this in garden if possible !
