How Far Down Fan Mount Should Filament Go?

Hi,

Step 21 of section 5 (Extruder) of the build instructions says to get the filament that came with the kit and 'Push it all the way down the fan mount'. I can only get the filament to go in about 20mm, is this correct?

Hi Andy

That's about right. It will be held in place with the cable ties.

Hi Andy,

it should be ok. To have a better understanding of this part design, you can have a look at the model that can be found here: https://github.com/prusa3d/Orignal-Prusa-i3/blob/master/Printed-Parts/stl/5015housing-MK3.stl

You can see that the hole is around 3 cm deep, but 2 cm should be ok to hold the cables in the right position.

Unfortunately, your picture doesn't show any stringing/obstructions within the hole... To get 3cm, it does need to be drilled out.

I just found my original fan mounting; the hole in that is exactly 2 cm deep.

Guys,

Thanks for info, I thought I might have a problem with the fan mount but obviously not.

Andy.

I added some hot glue to help secure the 3mm filament.

Not necessarily a good idea... When the filament breaks, you will have troubles removing it.

We had one user on here who used thermal paste for the thermistor and unfortunately, that went very hard at high temps and he had major issues changing it at a later stage.

Hot glue is easily removed, I do not envisage that the 3mm filament will ever break, however if it does I can clean up and hot glue again 😀

I use hot glue in a lot of my electronic projects. . It is common practice to secure some components, cables etc. It can easily be removed.

Trust me, the filament will break. Has happened to me and Peter that I know of. He did come up with a solution that I will try with melting 2 pieces of 1.75mm filament together at the end so it will fit in the slot.

Richard,

Ok fair enough, but as I say I will cross that bridge when I come to it. It is overall not needed with some mods I have in mind.

@Richard and Peter.

Did the failure of the 3mm filament, affect your prints? In the scale of things. I would propose removing it, as it seems redundant. The flexibility within the twisted wrap maybe enough to fight the torsion and stress that breaks the 3mm filament. Flexbility is the answer.

The filament is used to hold the wire bundle up so it doesn't hit the print. It has come close enough for me to do Peter fix and it is working great.

Re: How Far Down Fan Mount Should Filament Go?

Hi Nigel,

I'm pretty sure that if it's designed this way, it's because Josef already evaluated alternatives and that it's the best compromise to hold the wires up while avoiding the cables to bend at specific place, which could break cables. I see no gain to avoid the initial design, when tied properlly, it just works perfectly.

+1 What Christophe says.

The filament is needed for the proper management of the cable. To leave it out will cause problems.
