HELP y-axis POP (sounds like flicking a soda can)

I recently ordered and assembled the Prusa i3 MK2s kit. For the most part it seemed to go very well and everything seems/seemed to be properly alligned and leveled. I then proceeded to print quite a few items, several of which were 20+ hour prints. Everything has come out looking incredible. At this point I have 7d:12h:33m of print time.

On my last print (never before), it started making this weird popping sound. This sound occurs now almost any time my y-axis is moved, even when not turned on and moved by hand. Attached is a video of the noise made when moving the y-axis through the front panel settings.

I can't find anything hitting the bed underneath. The spots where it clicks aren't consistent. Sometimes I can do a full y-axis movement with no sounds, other times it is nonstop. Any idea what is wrong?

It sounds like plastic catching on the frame. Check under the bed and see if one of the zip ties holding the bed bearings has rotated or broke loose.

I have the MK2S so the bed bearings are all held on with the metal U-bolts. The only zip ties I can see would be the 4 in the corners holding on the y-axis rods but lots of popping happens no where near them. I took off the bed, but left the y-carriage on to try to isolate the sound. The sound still happens with the bed off. With the bed off it is a lot easier to see and look for something catching and I still am not seeing anything.

Here is a link to an image of the positioning of the y-carriage when a pop happened. The location of the pop is not consistent though so there is nothing special about this particular spot.

I appreciate the help. Any other thoughts on what it could be?

check your y motor mount it looks skewed in the pic ( switch is higher than the motor )it could be the belt riding the gear,

Good catch on that. That is been fixed (the picture made it look way worse than it was). My guess is I adjusted the top nuts and not the bottom while lining things up. However...it turns out that is not related to this pop sound.

I detached the middle screws so the y-axis belt is no longer attached to the y-carriage. The sound is happening when the y-carriage is moved independent of the belt/motor. The y-carriage is very jumpy when trying to move it along the rods by hand. It seems like there is something going on with the y-bearings themselves.

I just removed the y-carriage so I have detached bearings that can freely move along the y-axis rods. The two on the left can easily be pushed front to back with no resistance. The single bearing on the right definitely feels like there is something catching. I am assuming that is where my sound is coming from.

At this point I feel confident this is a single bearing issue. Is this a "contact Prusa and see if they will send me a new one" type of problem? Or is this a "buy some new ones off of Amazon" type of problem? In any case, thanks for the help.

What was the result of your problem? Did you get a new set of bearings? I may be experiencing the same problem, but not quite as bad. Thanks....

It was the linear bearing of the y-axis, specifically the solo on on the right. I contacted Prusa (printer was only a few weeks old) and after a bit more information they sent me some replacements free of charge. The replacement fixed the problem.

Sadly, the replacement did not come with additional gummies.

Thanks - I assume they are just the standard LM8UU bearings that are for sale on Amazon, or do you know what brand PRUSA uses? I know that some have updated to drylin bearings but I wantted to stick to the original equipment as much as I can.

I had that problem too a few weeks ago. Also because of the linear bearing(s) which just have been a few weeks old either. I did not specify which one, I just changed every bearing to a drylin.

Much smoother, quieter and without lubricants. The only problem you need to be aware of when using drylin is that you have to get your axis really parallel ❗

I do not know the brand but they appear to be the typical LM8UU bearings.
